Report: Some areas in China under martial law after protests

By Eve Bower, CNN

May 29, 2011 -- Updated 0210 GMT (1010 HKT)

(CNN) -- In an apparent response to days of protests, Chinese authorities have declared martial law in parts of the northeast's inner Mongolia autonomous region, according to Amnesty International.

The region has long been the scene of ethnic tension between Mongolians, who have lived in the area for centuries, and the Han people, who arrived in larger numbers after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Han people are the majority ethnic group in China.

In the report released Friday, Amnesty International detailed protests in and around the city of Xilinhot.

CNN contacted officials in the affected areas, but they declined to comment.

According to the human rights organization, 2,000 Mongolian students took to the streets Wednesday in Xilinhot, in a show of solidarity with an ethnic Mongolian herder by the name of "Mergen," who was killed earlier this month when he was hit by a coal truck that was driven by ethnic Hans.

In the case of China, is there any real difference between martial law and “conventional” law?

What?

You mean all is not harmony and peace in China?

From all of the “China is bound to take over the world” stories I’ve seen around for years now, China is the hope for the new world.

Actually, it seems to me that China might just be another paper tiger. When the China bubble finally pops, then we’ll see the real depression start.

Yes, I think “autonomous region” is a ChiCom euphemism for “gigantic gulag” for non-Han slaves of the state.

Re: Actually, it seems to me that China might just be another paper tiger. When the China bubble finally pops, then we’ll see the real depression start.

To be honest,

I for one must give full credit to the CIA for a job well executed in the Inner Mongolia affair.

I for one must give full credit to the CIA for the uprising which killed over 200 in Xinjiang, China.

I for one must give full scores to the CIA for the Tibet uprising of ‘08.

I for one must give the CIA full credit for the TAM uprising of ‘79.

I for one must give full credit to the CIA for the backing it gave to Aung San Suu Kyi.

I for one must give full credit to the CIA for the clever instigation of the uprising in Egypt, in Tunisia, in Yemen, in Libya, in Syria, and in the bringing back of Bhutto while working on the ousting of Musharaf in Pakistan...

So, where next?

They tried sending the Laura Ling and Euna Lee sisters, and others too of course, into Kim’s jungle to try and sex up the underground there but that failed...

They tried the Cheonan torpedo trick but that didn’t do the job because thing just didn’t add up and and it didn’t went the way they had hoped...

They tried exploiting the UN on the basis of Kimmy’s breaking of the nuke accord inked but to no avail...

Yes, where?!!!

Manchuria looks to be [a ripe but yet untouched playground for insurgencies of all mystical kinds]. Yes! CIA incubated and hatched hat tricks could well make this the next hot potato for uprisings in the world of the Chi-Comn but...

“Who ultimately is the one’s that’ll gets hurt by it?”

The one’s to get hurt definitely isn’t the ChiComs. It definitely won’t be the CIA who’ll be the victim here. In the end, it’s the Tibetan rebels, it’s the Xinjiang rebels, it’s the Mongolian rebels who were lured inspired by the CIA to rebel against the ChiCom’s who are really the one’s to get hurts here. So why be stupid all you stupid rebels out there?!!!

Anyway, my hat to ya Dear Panetta!

Re: Thanks for the ping. Yet another etnic group being treated like crap by the Han.

Please allow me to rephrase the above:

How’s about the term [another ethnic group falling under the hat tricks of the CIA] instead?

I mean such dumb people’s!! ! Peasants! Illiterate Nomads! The Hans, [as I had read], offered them schooling and higher education on State expenses as a means of smarten them (refering to Tibetans, Uygers or Chinese Turks, and Mongolians) up but they refused and insisted on clinging to their traditional nomadic ways. So, what can anyone do?

Such simple-minded people they allow themselves to be tricked into prostituting themselves for selfish western interests.

God!!! I can still recall the mid western dumb swimmer who swam across the great Pacific divide, then risked the Aung San Suu Kyi love lake and all of this for the deep love he have for Dearest Suu Kyi? I’m deeply moved!

I mean is this Aung San Suu Kyi? Cleopatra or somethin???

Traffic accidents happens everyday in China, it happens in America, it happens in the seas and in the skies of the world. It happens elsewhere in the world. But, it takes a bunch of dumb people’s to call it a :) etnic :) cleansing!!!!

Again, my hats off to the CIA for a job well done...

You're a paid PLAN propagandist. I am amazed that you've lasted so long here.

The Hans, [as I had read], offered them schooling and higher education on State expenses as a means of smarten them (refering to Tibetans, Uygers or Chinese Turks, and Mongolians) up but they refused and insisted on clinging to their traditional nomadic ways. So, what can anyone do?

They could haul their arrogant murdering arses out of territories they took at the point of a gun.
