Even 3.5 sounds too high to me. A few years ago they estimated that 1% of the population was homosexual. I know they’ve been recruiting, even in the government schools, but I strongly doubt that anywhere near 25% have made the choice to be homosexual!
Again, I think it depends on where you live -- urban, suburban or rural. When I lived in West LA, I'd have sworn the numbers exceeded the 25% number, even back in the 1980's. In Sacramento, I'd guess about a tenth of that. In San Francisco... well it's San Francisco. If you are in a rural location, I don't imagine you are going to be seeing many out of the closet gays, anywhere -- too many easy places to bury a body ;)
