Ha! That was part of my email name a long time ago. It got some good responses in the 90’s.

Some kind of a meld of John Galt and Mad Max, coming within the next decade (and beyond for a generation or two).

My new 2011 F-150 has one of these installed.

Tells whether seat belts were in use; how fast before the event; where the driver was positioning the steering wheel just before the event; when were brakes applied before the event.

And lots of wonderful other stuff!

I turned off that annoying seat belt “minder” in my 2004 F-150.

And I will be in heaven as my pre-catalytic converter car goes along as it pleases. Do it.

Yes, Big Brother IS watching you... how long before every citizen is required to carry a camera up his/her butt?

The arseholes in Illinois made those of us unfortunate enough to live in certain areas submit to having emissions tests of our vehicles wherein they stuck a probe up our vehicle's exhaust pipe to determine if it passed or failed. This of course required the construction of test facilities throughout our area and the hiring of government employees to operate them and eat donuts on our dime. If your car or truck failed, you had to get your car repaired, whether you could afford to do so or not. Meanwhile the stinky diesel powered busses could pollute to high heaven. And if you happened to live in nearby blighted non-white urban areas known for sending the black smoke of burning buildings, stolen cars, and piles of discarded tires you and your vehicles - which as it happens were the ones that did the most smoking- were exempt and you did not have to report for testing.

Eventually the government will require everyone to show up to have their personal exhaust pipes probed. Oh, wait... if you fly you get probed already by TSA.

Katie Couric already reported on that.

If they do the black boxes should only be accessible by the OWNER OF THE EFFING CAR and nobody else.

It’s your damn car.

And you should have the option of NOT having one. so I say NO to big brother. Eff off.

I already have a dash cam I chose to put there so I can record what goes on in front of my car. I travel alone most of the time and I have no desire for someone to stop short in front of me and claim I rear-ended them.

"I figure my 57 BelAir is good for another 50 years. It is easier to get parts for it than some new cars, and cheaper. In a pinch, some baling wire will do."

Good work, Guru! I'll be building the next engine with more stroke and a few other things for a Jeep Cherokee (4.0 L Renix), after we get more pressing projects done. It should still get about 22 miles to the gallon on the highway for the rare supply runs over high passes, etc. ...already replaced most other needed things and about to replace the rest of the wiring.

We'll store extra electronic parts with ICs and other small components in a trash can with ground, extra shields (cheap, thin metal, screens,...) and layers of insulation with copper wool around the lid seal. ...same for ham radio equipment, after we choose that.

We've found all kinds of little tech. tricks, e.g., how to neatly cut laminated glass windshields with cheap tools (for chopped tops, installing in alternative vehicles, etc.).

I've been trying synthetic oil in an overhead valve, gas powered generator for an off-grid well pump, and it works fine so far for several hundred hours. We'll find out whether or not it will go well over the estimated 3,000 hours MTBF.

More Government Compulsion.

Free Men need not ask permission, I suppose we are no longer free men.

"Some kind of a meld of John Galt and Mad Max, coming within the next decade (and beyond for a generation or two)."

Yep. I'm really preparing mainly for needing to spend very little, including fuel. The off-grid power and heating plants are actually a hardship due to being so far away from the grid. ...bought the place at a very low price a long time ago. But the cost saving measures will also help to keep us in the middle of nowhere most of the time and out of any fray that might happen. There are downsides: winds over 100 mph, even during winter, temps below -30 F, nearly nine months of winter, hard packed, sterile soil that has to be built for at least a couple of years (and greenhouses). There are gobs of small and large predators and pests. ...long way to go, doing it in tiny out-of-pocket increments. For some of the utility stuff (incl. root cellar for seed potatoes), I'll be digging and busting rocks all summer long and then some (at over 9,000 feet).

Another Government agency that has outlived any usefulness and is no longer needed.
