How Roger Ailes Built the Fox News Fear Factory

The onetime Nixon operative has created the most profitable propaganda machine in history. Inside America's Unfair and Imbalanced Network.... (HIT PIECE)

Chairman: Roger Ailes at Fox News. The network says his "dear friend" Rush Limbaugh, "is a reflection of him."

At the Fox News holiday party the year the network overtook archrival CNN in the cable ratings, tipsy employees were herded down to the basement of a Midtown bar in New York. As they gathered around a television mounted high on the wall, an image flashed to life, glowing bright in the darkened tavern: the MSNBC logo. A chorus of boos erupted among the Fox faithful. The CNN logo followed, and the catcalls multiplied. Then a third slide appeared, with a telling twist. In place of the logo for Fox News was a beneficent visage: the face of the network’s founder. The man known to his fiercest loyalists simply as "the Chairman" – Roger Ailes.

“It was as though we were looking at Mao,” recalls Charlie Reina, a former Fox News producer. The Foxistas went wild. They let the dogs out. Woof! Woof! Woof! Even those who disliked the way Ailes runs his network joined in the display of fealty, given the culture of intimidation at Fox News. “It’s like the Soviet Union or China: People are always looking over their shoulders,” says a former executive with the network’s parent, News Corp. “There are people who turn people in.”

This article appears in the June 9, 2011 issue of Rolling Stone. The issue will be available on newsstands and in the online archive May 27.

The key to decoding Fox News isn’t Bill O’Reilly or Sean Hannity. It isn’t even News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch. To understand what drives Fox News, and what its true purpose is, you must first understand Chairman Ailes. “He is Fox News,” says Jane Hall, a decade-long Fox commentator who defected over Ailes’ embrace of the fear-mongering Glenn Beck. “It’s his vision. It’s a reflection of him.”

Rolling Stone *claims*
Reagan '84: The DirectorAiles – a veteran of Reagan’s media team in 1980 who was overseeing the creation of the legendary “Morning in America” campaign – knew that framing one good shot in a debate could make the difference come Election Day. “Roger had the presence to be a director,” says Ed Rollins, who managed the ’84 campaign. “And Reagan, who had always been around directors, would listen to Roger."

Must be election season.

I read an article in “Rolling Stone” once. Vomited violently. The writing eloquently bespoke, boisterously, of its idiotic, amoral, scumbag, dirt bag, creepy, stinking commie lying staff of writers, editors, owners, associates and subscriber lowlife. Should be flushed down the toilet, along with the fresh entrails of all the associated moronic jerks. /rant

Let’s see. Fox viewership is way ahead of all the lib stations.

I guess the American people are just SO STUPID they can’t tell a biased, horrid, EVIL station when they see it. Why if it wasn’t for Fox, we could be reveling in European Style socialism now, where Christians are unfit to foster, where people who pray with a patient lose their jobs, and people who try to defend their homes with evil guns against dangerous gangs end up in jail themselves!

Surrounded by all the elitest, intelligent MSM, Americans insist on this piece of propaganda. I guess Rolling Stone doesn’t GET IT.

The people who watch FOX are not THE STUPID ONES.

I know I’m yelling, but these jerks at RS make me tired.

This writer must know that people watch Fox because it points out Leftists lies on the major networks and what the left WON’T mention. In that sense, Fox IS biased, but only because the MSM are such liars.

There will always be a niche for juvenile pap like ‘Rolling Stone’ on college campuses. I’m sure there are still little Trotskyite groups meeting in basements with “stylish” kids wearing Che t-shirts, etc. I remember those campus days fondly, if embarrassingly. That was in the early ‘70s. I once went to see Rennie Davis (of ‘Chicago Seven’ fame) speak. He talked about the US military using “laaaazzzzer beeeeeeams!” in Vietnam. Davis went on to become a business consultant to Fortune 500 companies.

Ahh well.. It’s good to be a grownup.

ROTFL. The publication remains anti-war and, IMO, anti-American. Of course, you’re right, it appeals to the mushy-headed college kids looking to be hip and to vote democrat or [hopefully] green party.

I fought all those groups in my day. Of course I went to our local university with my friends.

None of them are conservative enough for me.

Personally, I don't care about Right and left politically.

I'm old enough to have seen truly conservative Democrats and Republicans that had the roots of an upbringing that mirrored their values.

Now, both are simply words for “Progressives”.
