At least with Quayle, the spelling bee officials gave him a card which showed the spelled p-o-t-a-t-o-e. He should have noticed it was misspelled on the card and questioned it. I still wonder if he wasn't set up...

And why is his signature so unlike his normal handwriting??

I have read that according to handwriting analysts, very large initials on a signature are an indication of an inflated sense of self-importance, ego and in some cases narcissism.
