LONDON It was all going so well.
But when the time came for President Obama to deliver his toast to Queen Elizabeth Tuesday night, the meticulously planned state dinner at Buckingham Palace turned, well, awkward.
As Obama began wrapping up his remarks, he put down his notecards and picked up his glass.
Ladies and gentlemen, please stand with me and raise your glasses as I propose a toast, the president said, as the guests stood up. To her majesty the Queen.
At this point, the band queued up God Save the Queen. But Obama wasnt quite finished yet.
So he kept talking over the British national anthem and the president competed with orchestra for a few more seconds.
For the vitality, Obama said just before the music started, of the special relationship between our peoples, and in the words of Shakespeare, To this blessed plot, this Earth, this realm, this England.
Obama raised his glass, but nobody else in view of the camera followed. And the queen, who had been looking straight ahead, glanced over to offer a pained smile.

It is sooooo embarrassing and yet comical that I just had to feel sorry for the president. Really. It was just awful. So he could have broken into a Chicago rendition of My Country Tis of Thee to make it even more hilariously pathetic.
Give the poor guy a break.
He was thrown by the fact that the toast didn’t have an “I” or “me” in it.
And a total shmuck....the part that gets thrown away after the moyel is done.
No, they are all too busy beating up and trying to destroy Israel.
<’Protocol Czar’>
Yep - excellent idea.
I have been wondering forever if it’s assumed the White House always has a chief of protocol available, and - we could guess at a lot of reasons - this administration has chosen to wing it??!
Thanks!! OMG! SATIN in the morning??? Or is it Acetate??
“he put down his notecards”
For Mr.Teleprompter this is the key phrase here. This guys articulation level without his notes is akin to FoghornLegHorn on crack.
You got that right. And it never ends either. Bowing to the Saudi king, giving a blind prime minister a collection of DVDs, giving the Queen of the UK an ipod containing your speeches, bowing to the Mayor of Tampa, sending the Dali Llama to exit the White House through the garbage pile, abandoning the prime minister of Israel to fend for himself in a room of the White House while you go have supper with your family, using note cards to read a simple toast, addressing personalized invitations to 9/11 family members as "Dear 9/11 family member", etc. etc. etc.
January 2013 cannot come soon enough.
Indeed.
Would you care to expand on how my post was trolling in any way whatsoever? Public of private message is fine.
I have read Freep for a long time as an antidote for the watery, sociallist bile they call news here, but have never had the time to get actively involved and posting until recently.
If I have violated some rule, please let me know.

LEFT WING MEDIA BIAS ALERT !!!
Jet lag? Flying from Dublin to London is cause for jet lag? I am outraged how our media continues to make excuses for this guy after crucifying Bush for eight years.
When he signed the guest book, he dated it May 24th, 2008. TOTUS should have done the signing.
IMO, this smart-assed usurper and his administration are choosing to ignore protocol and just plain good manners and are snickering about it from their liberal, lofty perch of assumed superiority.
In other words, to paraphrase Forest Gump, "trash is as trash does."
What was the problem with EC’s post?
We’re all completely embarrassed by this buffoon too.
You have to have thick skin to survive here, EC...unless the moderator slaps you down, you can ignore most of it.
Welcome to FR.

Yeah, it annoyed people here too, and, so far, has been mainly seen as yet another example of American boorishness.
Rubbed me the wrong way - That's just me. Of course that assumes (from both of us) that Obama is American, the factuality of which is still not established.
oschmucko
I don’t see anything wrong with your post. I cringe at how this fool ignores protocol and continues to make the US a laughingstock.
‘_______their liberal, lofty perch of assumed superiority.’
I think that’s it - you’ve got it!
Otherwise, they’re not really ‘learning on the job,’ are they!
LOL!
