Former Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cain placed a surprising second in a Zogby poll of likely Republican primary voters released Tuesday.
The poll measured support for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who says he will not run, at 17 percent. Cain was preferred by 14 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul by 10 percent.
The results place Cain well ahead of many leading candidates, and come on the heels of a strong performance in Fox News May 5 primary debate in South Carolina. Cain was one of five participants.
Candidates widely considered frontrunners all received less than ten percent support.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was supported by 9 percent of respondents and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich by 7 percent. [ For complete coverage of politics and policy, go to Yahoo! Politics ]
Businessman Donald Trump, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels were all supported by four percent.
Zogby also asked respondents to select the candidates that they would never vote for.
Trump led the never field with 50 percent, followed by Gingrich at 36 percent, Palin at 36 percent, Huckabee at 34 percent, Paul at 32 percent, and Romney at 27 percent.
The poll was administered online, a different method than used in most scientific polls. There were 1,377 respondents and a calculated margin of error of +/- 2.7 percent.

Go Herman....first black “conservative” president. He can peel off about 15% of Obama voters IMO.
I love Herman Cain, but before anyone starts crowing about this “poll,” please keep in mind that
THIS IS NOT A SCIENTIFIC POLL
IT IS AN INTERNET SURVEY OF SELF-SELECTED PARTICIPANTS WHO SIGNED UP TO ANSWER POLL QUESTIONS FOR ZOGBY
While all polls should be taken with a grain of salt, this does not even meet the minimum criteria to be considered a poll, and there isn’t enough salt in the Dead Sea to make this result palatable.
Now that IS news. Romney got a slight bump up as well between the two polls, apparently.
The other thing I’m noticing is that a lot of candidates’ “Never” numbers went WAY down. I get the feeling that has more to do with a change in methodology than in an actual change in voter opinion.
Cain doing this well in two consecutive polls is interesting. I’d like to see it corroborated by a different polling outfit before I read too much into it. Unfortunately, Zogby appears to be the only one including him in their surveys right now.
My mistake, this one was.
Thanks for the NBC update.
Go, Cain, go!
Actually, in their latest poll, Cain has moved to fist place: http://www.zogby.com/news/2011/05/23/ibope-zogby-poll-cain-passes-christie-among-gop-primary-voters-no-one-gop-field-leads-obama-/
rob777, while the article was not 100% clear as to whether this was an actual Zogby Poll or one of those useless Zogby Interactive “Polls” (really an Internet survey), the article linked to Zogby’s press release that makes eminently clear that this was indeed one of those Internet surveys: http://www.zogby.com/news/2011/05/10/ibope-zogby-poll-cain-now-second-christie-top-choice-gop-primary-voters-/
Do you think the Aquila business might slow it down again?
Just sayin’ ... the vetting thing has barely begun. Well, except for Palin. Her vetting has been virtually non-stop for about three years now, and she’s still standing. We’ll see if Mr. Cain still looks as good as he does now after he’s been through what she’s been through.
“IT IS AN INTERNET SURVEY OF SELF-SELECTED PARTICIPANTS WHO SIGNED UP TO ANSWER POLL QUESTIONS FOR ZOGBY”
In other words a completely meaningless poll likely contaminated with democrat shills.
How could a legit poll include someone who is NOT running? They might as well throw Ronald Reagan in there also or how about Abe Lincoln? I know neither one are running but they will likely poll pretty well!
These polls need to be relegated to what they really are and that’s just silly propaganda.
Yes, I corrected that oversight in post number 25.
I have no beef with Cain, I have a beef with people that feel it is necessary too lie. The man has no name id, it is a very, very long shot that he will ever hit 20% in the polls.
Remember nobody ever heard of Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter at this point in the process. Cain's real uphill battle will be with the GOP/RINO establishment. I think conservatives will support him. The thing is if the leadership does a hatchet job on him conservatives might sit home and we'll get another 4 years of the Fresh Prince of Bill Ayres.
Exactly. After last Sunday’s pathetic ill informed and amatuerish crap about right of return he should cram on his trilby and Stevie Wonder shades and go hide under a rock. Bring on the Palinization of Cain. He’ll be better for it for if he survives.
Even though the other day when Hush Limbaugh was talking about potential GOP candidates, HUSH didn’t say a word about Cain, he was pushing Pawlenty and Romney pretty hard...pissed me off.
Though I've not made up my mind, I'm very, very pleased by this news.
Remember the Koch $$$ that backs him! !

I think that’s a tad bit of an exageration. Both Carter and Clinton were governors so yes a whole bunch of people knew who they were.
It’s NOT an exageration to say reletively few people know who Herman Cain is.
I have nothing against him. In fact I agree with him the great majority of the time. That being said the presidential race IS as much about a popularity contest than it is about issues. He will get some recognition this time and maybe even a spot on a ticket or office. Then he may have a chance in the future.
