You must be willfully ignorant. There were scores of Democrats making a very big deal about McCain's status as a Natural Born Citizen. I do not have time to go back and find links to news stories and columns for you right now, but the original "birthers" were Democrats going after McCain. McCain has been used as a tool by the left for many years; I have to give the Democrat leadership credit for utilizing him well especially when it comes to using him for cover for Obama's questionable status. It was masterful and I am certain that the backrooms have been filled with laughter on many occasions.

But I was taught that under nearly every circumstance, the law holds that people born in this country are citizens. I’m not aware of any strong case law indicating otherwise or that they are not also natural born.

I think you’re the one who needs to brush up on recent history. No serious Democrat ever claimed that McCain was ineligible to run for president. I recall the mild murmur of stories in that regard, but none were treated seriously. So your claim is really not valid.
Also, I’m not backing off anything. What I was taught in school is essentially what I believe any court will rule should such a case arise.
