Connecticut is forging ahead with a new two-tiered driver's license system despite questions about whether a federal law tightening identity requirements will actually be enforced amid a revolt by more than 20 states.
Under the new system, Connecticut will begin offering an "identity-verified" version of its regular driver's license to comply with the controversial federal initiative to increase the security of government-issued IDs.

Those who want to continue using their driver's license at airport security checkpoints should brace for some inconvenience. Instead of just taking a new photo at DMV, motorists will have to stand in line with a birth certificate and other documents in hand – then wait for the clerk to verify they're authentic.

Undocumented immigrants once could legally obtain a driver's license in Connecticut. Seymour explained that a driver's license was not originally intended to be an identification document, but rather a document that affirmed that its holder could drive and knew the rules of the road. Years ago they did not even include a photo.
The driver's license evolved over time, especially after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Beginning in 2002, applicants had to prove they were in the country legally to get a license. But undocumented immigrants who got their licenses before then have been able to renew them.
"We do not check legal status on renewals," Seymour said.
That will not change under the new system, Seymour said. Undocumented immigrants who simply ask to renew a regular license — the type that will have "not for federal identification" stamped on it — will be allowed to do so.

Do you object to showing any ID to get on a plane or only one that has been verified as belonging to you?
Is this the new Enhanced Drivers License like we have in WA? You can use it to get into and out of Mexico or Canada without a passport. You can still get a regular DL just to drive with or as an id.
We have the same thing in NY. I just got a regular license. If I wanted to fly, I would present my US passport.

Both. I flew commercially (> 75K miles/yr) for three decades without any ID required.
So I ask you, what happened to that right I once possessed?
This would create a class of peons in our country.
It is inimical to this country to be largely populated by any other than citizens.

Things change. At one time you could get a drivers license at the drugstore for 2 bits with no test. I think I'm glad that this is no longer possible.
Ids to fly have been required for 15 years. I haven't seen any degradation of peoples rights because of this. I also don't feel any impingement of my rights by having to show an ID to vote or buy alcohol.
A person can remain anonymous if they want, but they cannot expect the rest of society to cooperate. There's some things you can't do anonymously, everyone makes their own choices.
Then in the early 1990s, ID's were required, I don't remember what prompted the increased security.
Then 9-11 with the box cutters and heightened security. Then the Patriot Act and TSA. Now full body scanners.
So what you are saying is the government doesn’t expand citizen rights, just infringes on them incrementally or takes them away. You’re a good fellow, you are.
That has to be nonsense. States have ID cards that look like licenses for non-drivers who wish to have a picture ID.
What's next? Passports were not intended to be an identification document, but rather a document that let a person travel internationally?

I'm still shocked that it only took box cutters
I had jury duty the other day and had to put pretty much everything in the bin to put through the metal detector - it was only a regular body metal detector too - not the x-ray - so that was OK - but when I put my keys in the bucket the security guy said - "I have to take your scissors" right off the bat(I have folding scissors on my key chain)
Now in the recent past -well after 9/11 - I've gone to court houses and got through with my folding scissors - now they are all over stupid folding scissors
He grabbed my keys and gave me a ticket - I took them back -took off the scissors and handed just those to him (I got them back after jury duty)
But the thing was - I can do just as much damage to someone with a handful of keys as with folding scissors (or those box cutters)and he gave me my keys to walk around that court house with a decorative pin on it that could do more damage than folding keys
Ahh, the illusion of security....
