Rochelle Pender's family and co-workers were stunned Friday to learn that the smiling Walmart greeter was dead. Police said employees at the 2500 Forest Hills Road store were chasing a suspected shoplifter Wednesday when someone ran into Pender. She fell and hit her head and died two days later.

A Walmart spokesman said Pender, 71, had been with the company for 15 years and was a beloved member of the team at the Wilson store.
"She's going to be greeting people in heaven now," Langley said.

Re-read the article. The article doesnt say he was running or that he was the one who knocked over the lady. It suggests that those trying to apprehend him knocked her over.
The article leaves it vague in the same way it refers to him as a suspect. According to store employees the account of events is a little different. Apparently the store's Loss Prevention had performed what is called a Recovery with Detention. They had caught him shoplifting and were escorting him to the offices in the back of the store when Mr Lambert allegedly punched the LP and made a break for the front exit, where he allegedly bowled over Mrs Pender. He was detained again in front of the store, and when the police arrived he had to be pepper sprayed to stop him from fighting the store employees. This is where the assault charge stems from.
