A new IBOPE Zogby poll shows Atlanta businessman Herman Cain vaulting into the No. 1 front-runner position among active candidates as the choice to win the GOP presidential nomination in 2012.
Cain, a longtime Pillsbury executive who later became chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, was the preferred choice of 14 percent of the likely Republican primary voters polled.
His showing placed second only to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who got 17 percent. Christie, however, has insisted repeatedly that he will not be running for president in 2012. Ron Paul placed third with 10 percent, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who had 9 percent.
Pollster John Zogby told Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview that the sudden rise of Cain shows the degree of restlessness among GOP faithful, given their current options.
Hes not well known. Hes very plain speaking, Zogby said. But when someone enters the forum, as he did during that debate, and rises to the top, its kind of like Donald Trump, its kind of like Chris Christie: We dont like the field, this is a guy that we can believe in.
Cain was considered the winner of the recent Fox News debate held in South Carolina. His memorable applause line came when a panelist pointed out that he lacked experience holding public office. Cain pointed out that almost everyone elected to national office in Washington, D.C., had prior public service experience.

If Romney or anyone like him is the nominee (McCain) I’m with you brother. I will stay home. Sadly though, I’ve NEVER done that before, but this is too much.
I really thought SP would come on board and I will gladly be a volunteer and work myself into exhaustion for her, but I can’t figure out what she’s doing. Herman Cain is really starting to get me excited that we can get a real candidate that has real principles, other than SP or MB.
Definitely not part of the ruling class, whether D or R. I am so sick of all of them.
ROFLMAO! Great comeback!
I haven’t heard any talk about the Fair Tax. He’s still a strong advocate for it, right?
Look what happened to Hart when got back into the race.
Look what happened to Cuomo in 94.
Cloutcrammer wants ROMNEY! ROMNEY! ROMNEY!
He will be greatly dissapointed and I will relish watching Cain rip Romney to shredds in the debates!
I like Cain, Cristy not so hot and Mitt out.
GO HERMAN CAIN!
So, like, Cain doesn't? OR won't? Who other than Cain CAN take on Obama and not have the MSM completely discredit them?
And I have to question why he has Christie on this poll, after Christie has repeatedly said he's not running and has shown no interest in running.
///I havent heard any talk about the Fair Tax. Hes still a strong advocate for it, right?\\\
You are absolutely correct. Cain’s plan is brilliant and would blow this economy wide open if anyone listens to him.
From Politico: (They are nervous)
[Herman Cain has backed the Fair Tax plan, a proposal with a small, well-organized and vocal constituency, which would impose a national sales tax of just under 25 percent and abolish the income tax system. He has also backed a possible return to the gold standard but only after we significantly pay down our national debt, stabilize and grow our economy, spokeswoman Ellen Carmichael told POLITICO.]
Fred was good at soundbite comebacks such as his video response to Michael Moore, but that was about it. He didn’t have the gumption, or the interest, IMO. Plus, I suspect his friendship with McCain had something to do with it.
///I too supported Thompson and I have to say that if Fred have put half the energy in to his run that Cain is putting in we wouldn’t had gotten saddled with the Marxist Kenya Usurper.\\\
I agree, all too true!
And..........
How does that relate to Cain? Cain is not a Liberal Democrat the last I looked.
already been posted.
why does anyone believe this actual leftist dem party muslim who tried to throw the 2004 election to Kerry with his famous “landslide” phoney poll ?
Christie is not running. Read the article.......
If it was Rassy I'd give it more cred, @ this point Zogby has to much DNC baggage and it runs in the family, isn't his brother a big lobbyist as well....
This is the only serious issue I have with Palin. The way the media and socialists have demeaned her, wrongly of course, she's become the lighting rod of politics. It's going to be the dirtiest campaign anyway, what with Obama fighting for his political life Chicago style. We need a candidate who'll take him on, but not have the baggage that the media created around Palin.
But, except for the baggage, I still like her a lot.
Hard to believe that middle America would be so willing to put Christie Obama (by reputation only) so high in a poll over Palin, Pawlenty, and Bachmann Clinton.
