The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has determined former Minnesota Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard died from an accidental drug overdose.
The cause of death was listed as a mix of alcohol and oxycodone, a painkilling drug.
Boogaard had a history of back pain and shoulder injuries, as well as several concussions. He played just 22 games last season for the Rangers, sidelined by post-concussion symptoms since Dec. 9 after an on-ice fight with Matt Carkner of the Ottawa Senators.

Why is oxycodone even prescribed to people? I thought the drug maker lied about its addictive nature to the FDA.
"You can't fix stupid" [Ron White]
Because it works.
If you abuse it (and certain people do) it can kill you.
It falls into the category of people liking to outlaw things extremely helpful to some people because other people are irresponsible idiots.
If your doctor says one every eight hours, that means one at the most every eight hours, not two because today is an awful day, or three, or five.
"Well, St. Peter. I have no idea how that stuff got into my body. Could you please open the Gates, now?"
The quantity might be more than intended due to drug or liquor induced forgetfulness.
Netanyahu just did about 3 hours ago.
All high end painkillers are addictive, because past a certain point they stop killing the pain and start killing your ability to care, and being so high that you don’t care how much pain your in is addictive. But some people legitimately have that much pain.
I doubt he fixed it but he sure showed it for what it really is.
They didn’t saw “how” the oxycodone was taken, either. The biggest risk is not in swallowing two pills instead of one, but in powdering up the damn things and sniffing them like cocaine for a sudden rush of concentrated drug. Anyone who sniffs oxycodone knows they’re abusing, not just pushing the dose.
What is a Minnesota Wild enforcer?
It's distressing to read on FR, a conservative forum, that Nanny Government needs to protect us from ourselves by outlawing a pain relieving medication because some people have become addicted.
Excruciating pain makes one do things they would not ordinarily do.
I can’t fault anyone that gets addicted to pain killers. Poor man.
I agree. 0 says one may need to just take a pain pill, now they will want to take that away so we can die in agony.
“Why is oxycodone even prescribed to people? I thought the drug maker lied about its addictive nature to the FDA.”
Because it works really well for pain.
It just means that there’s no reason to believe he actually intended to kill himself. In this case there were probably pills left in the bottle — if he were suicidal, he would’ve taken all he had.
Long live Netty! Straight and honest man.
I was in excruciating pain for months last year, and I learned the medics will be damned before they actually try to treat pain these days.
He served a tour in Kuwait, returned to the states then deployed to Iraq. While there his jeep hit a mine and he was thrown from the jeep and suffered extensive back injuries and he was ultimately returned to the states...........
Move forward a few years and his last assignment was as an advisor to cadets back at West Point.
Last fall I contacted my friend by email and asked how his son was doing. He told me his son died last June of a drug overdose........That's all he told me and that he was yet unable to talk about it. He was devastated.
Knowing him as I do, and his son's dedication to the military, my own thoughts are that his son was not addicted to recreational drugs but rather the pain killers that were most likely prescribed for his back injuries.......
When one has debilitating pain due to whatever medical condition or injury, they will do whatever is necessary in order to help them maintain a pain free quality of life.......I cannot condemn anyone if an overdose of such medication results in their death.....
