I want to make sure every House Republican is protected from some kind of dishonest Democratic ad. So let me say on the record, any ad which quotes what I said on Sunday is a falsehood, because I have publicly said those words were inaccurate and unfortunate.
A grateful nation thanks you, Newt Gingrich. The presidential campaign is just starting, and already youve given us a passage that will live in infamy forever in the annals of American political speech. Your delightful quotation shall be filed under fiascos and flagged with a cross-reference to utter nonsense.
I cant remember when weve heard a politician plead so desperately to take back something he said. Then again, naked desperation is clearly in order. The favorite parlor game in Washington this week has been trying to remember a more disastrous campaign launch than the one Gingrich is having. Many candidates have stumbled coming out of the gate, but few have taken off like a shot in the wrong direction.
The great irony, of course, is that Gingrichs grievous error was to speak the truth. Appearing on Meet the Press last Sunday, he referred to the proposal by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to convert Medicare into a voucher program endorsed by all but four members of the GOP majority in the House as right-wing social engineering.

The WaPo liberal defense of Newt Gingrich:
____________________________________________________________________________
Prominent Republicans immediately grabbed their pitchforks, lit their torches and formed an angry mob. From opinion surveys and town-hall meetings, it was already clear that the Ryan plan to fundamentally alter the Medicare program is deeply unpopular and that ultimately it is likely to hurt the party at the polls. Now one of the best-known figures in the party, a candidate for the presidential nomination, was breaking ranks. Rather than accept the fact that Gingrich is right or was right, since he now wants us to forget he ever appeared on Meet the Press Republicans mau-maued him into a full-throated disavowal.
Translation: WaPo is saddened that they won't get a chance take out Newt themselves.
The pooch Newt screwed can see Russia from it’s kennel.
Eugene Robinson. If I wanted to attend a freak show, I’d seek a carnival, or just go to the nearest DNC meeting.
George Romney..."I was brainwashed...."
Interesting choice of words, "unfortunately I lied"? or "unfortunately you heard me evade"?
But then you never know what to believe from Newt's boy Genie, if anything.
having Eugene Robinson defend you is no favor to Newt
Gibberish from Eugene Robinson hasn’t made sense since,
uhm, well, uhm, gosh I can’t think of when.
Roger that!
How pathetic that Newts run at the Presidency was all of 24 hours. Just goes to show that the GOP RINO’s are still clueless.
We need a Grizzly type candidate that will defend their territory when intruded upon and feel comfortable in any setting because they know they are the bigger, smarter, stronger person.
Anyone with these qualifications (being a former Govenor from Alaska) please apply.
the Post does have its favorite Republicans
Noot shows his true colors as a Rockefeller GOPer.
I’m not sure what he showed.
This was bizarre by any standards. I never thought he had much of a chance, although he occasionally made a good statement (and has been very resolute in his opposition to sharia in the US), but I can’t imagine why he killed his possibilities with this statement.
Unless, of course, he believes it, in which case there is now way he should be our nominee.
Like Robinson would know the right thing to do about anything. Talk about a perfect reverse barometer. When Gingrich reads Robinson’s scribbling in support of his position, he ought to gasp in horror.
They're trying to dump him on us like they did with McCain last time around.
Why not? It worked!
If you are a supposed Conservative & The Washington Post comes to your defense, that should be the first sign you are in serious trouble with Conservatives.
Exactly. That’s why Newt is going after the independents and moderates. The MSMis giving him free press. All he has to do is beat Romney since at this time the only conservative is Herman Cain and Rick Santorum who did his best imitation of Joe Biden “stand up and let everyone see you”
Unless Bachmann or Palin get in the race, once Newt starts hammering Romneycare, it’s over.
Then for the general he tacks right. Who cares what the media says. Conservatives will come out for Newt.
Yesterday it was The Atlantic, now it’s the comPost.
Is anyone else uneasy about these significant liberal organs going into over-drive to resuscitate Gingrich?
