This “jumpseater’s” credentials should have been presented to the Captain well before departure. The Captain may or may not permit any given “jumpseater” a ride; but, if permitted a ride, the Captain may or may not allow the rider to take an empty seat in back. This appears to have been a breach of flight security.

Wonder why they would return to JFK as opposed to just finishing the flight and arresting the person on the other end? Or landing somewhere along the way and turning the stowaway in to authorities there.
It’s bad enough when they have to return because an engine falls off or the cargo area catches fire, but because some guy scammed his way on board seems to be reaching a bit.
I have no doubt they have a legitimate reason, but they didn’t say what in the article.
Maybe Mr. Rodriguez is a Dominican and if arrested there would be released and disappear.
In that case, we should send him back and put him on the do not fly, do not enter US list - such as it is, being adminstered by other paragons of citizenship and competence.
