From a book back in the 50s, IIRC. Brother in FL had a brother in SAC at Offut AFB, Omaha, NE. Their code was, the brother in SAC would call his brother in FL with the message, “Alas Babylon,” if SAC was releasing their B-52s from their fail-safe points, i.e.: the final nuclear battle was beginning.

You’re both right. In the book Alas Babylon, it says the phrase came from Revelation. I’ve reread the book in the past several months, it was published in 1959.

Alas, Babylon is a 1959 novel by American writer Pat Frank (the pen name of Harry Hart Frank). It was one of the first apocalyptic novels of the nuclear age and remains popular fifty years after it was first published. The novel deals with the effects of a nuclear war on the small town of Fort Repose, Florida, which is based upon the actual city of Mount Dora, which is about 15 miles NW of where we now live.
