While the idea of naming a U.S. Naval ship after labor leader Cesar Chavez has roiled some, California Democrat Sen. Barbara Boxer is thrilled that the activist will be receiving the honor.
Boxer called Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus Tuesday to thank him for the decision.
I applaud Secretary Mabus for continuing the Navys rich tradition of naming these supply ships after pioneers, explorers and visionaries by honoring César Chávez, who worked tirelessly to promote fair working conditions and equal rights for all Americans, Boxer said in a statement.
This is a fitting tribute to Chávez, who served in the Navy, and follows the Navys recent decisions to name other supply ships after American visionaries from Medgar Evers to Amelia Earhart to Lewis and Clark.
Republican California Rep. Duncan Hunter, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, had a very different opinion. He said that it was indicative of the Navys politicization.
This is insane. Chavez openly hated the military, worked with avowed communists and took money from them, and supported the VC during the Vietnam war. What’s next? The USS Jane Fonda?
Wonder if Boxer knows that Chavez was against illegal aliens. He wanted them deported immediately because he thought they took farm jobs from those who were citizens and legal immigrants.
Perhaps not,
But pointing out Chavez was an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration is a great way to respond to any liberals gloating about this new ship.
And not a bad point to point out on general principle, so Latinos are not brainwashed to believe otherwise.
Gotta push back, don’t let the left set the agenda.
....unless it’s a garbage scow! :)
Wait a second — wasn’t Chavez a racist nativist who opposed illegal immigration?
After they rename it, they could name a garbage scow the Cesar Chavez.
Hopefully, the “ship” is a garbage skow.
At least it’s better than naming a ship the USS Hugo Chavez.
SecNav works for, or technically, reports to the Present.
Every day, you think they can’t flaunt their socialist anti-Americanism any more, and then ......
Ray Mabus, secretary of the US Navy
Prior to joining the administration of President Barack Obama, Mabus served in a variety of top posts in government and the private sector. In 1988, Mabus was elected Governor of Mississippi.
As the youngest governor of Mississippi in more than 100 years at the time of his election, he stressed education and job creation. He passed B.E.S.T. (Better Education for Success Tomorrow), one of the most comprehensive education reform programs in America, and was named one of Fortune Magazines top ten education governors.
He was appointed Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the Clinton Administration in 1994. During his tenure as Ambassador, a crisis with Iraq was successfully averted and Saudi Arabia officially abandoned the boycott of United States businesses that trade with Israel.
He also was Chairman and CEO of Foamex, a large manufacturing company, which he led out of bankruptcy in less than nine months paying all creditors in full and saving equity. Prior to becoming Governor, he was elected State Auditor of Mississippi and served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the cruiser USS Little Rock.

Built to deliver iceberg lettuce to the troops?
Great. Maybe this will be followed by the USS Lenin, the USS Trotsky and the USS Castro.
Connie shakes head, hair on fire, brain hurts, please wake me from this run amok!
LOL!
11:32 PM... three posters with the same thought!
“Is it possible to change the name once we get rid of certain numbnut congresscritters?”
If I was elected president of the United States of America, you bet your bank.
They must stay up nights thinking of ways to insult America.
You can just bet that they aren’t gaining any kind of respect
from other countries, though, with this moronic behavior.
As for Ray Mabus, what a wad of stinking bilge.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and the Navy SEALs will have to utilize this thing, and it gets the “helo we had to leave behind” treatment. Ka-boom. (with nobody on board of course)
