I think this is exactly it. Trump is no doubt a wealthy man, but the extent of his wealth has long been in question. I think the closer he got to it, he realized that the gap between his mouth and his bank account was going to turn him into a laughingstock.
Er,... I mean, ... too much of a laughingstock to win the Presidency or be able to show his face in New York. I think once he hit 'national laughingstock', he started to lose his nerve, and the idea of going further was too much for him.
