The tale of the Governator and the baby
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 5/18/11 | Debra J. Saunders

In 2005, Maria Shriver told Vanity Fair that many people were surprised that a Kennedy clan member would marry Hollywood bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"People at first were like, 'You married the other side of the tracks.' " She said, "They have trouble with the class thing. ... Everyone assumed that I was supposed to marry someone like a John Kerry, some preppy that had gone to Harvard or Yale. I didn't want to marry those boys - I did not like them. I had been around them my whole life. I interrupted the story line."

Tuesday the Los Angeles Times reported that Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with a longtime member of his household staff before he became governor. The story follows news of the couple's separation.

The tragedy of this whole story is that Shriver fell into a classic female trap. She thought she had found a man who would deliver her from a toxic family pattern, only to discover that in the end, she married, well, another Kennedy.

Marriage and children are on two separate tracks biologically. Marriage is a commitment to a set of values, which leads to disappointment in today's superficial culture, where sex has become about personal satisfaction. But making children is always about perpetuation of the species.

She may have traded her personal happiness for some fresh bloodlines and renewed vigor in Kennedy-descended stock. Small comfort to her, better prospects for the human race.

Begs the question, what percentage of men are “Kennedys.” Maybe the odds were not in her favor.

(Full disclosure: I get propositions from husbands all too regularly.)

I heard this morning on the radio that is baby is no baby, but is 14-15 years old. Can anyone confirm what I heard? If correct, it’s even more mind boggling that Ahnold was able to keep it hid from the public and his wife for so long.

“John Kerry”- the grifter gigolo who made his money by his wife’s family paying him to go away- a preppie aristocrat?

LOL!

Oh well, it only took Ol’ Joe Kennedy 2 generations to go from lace curtain Irish to American “aristocracy”

And Maria must have heard stories about how Grampa Joe brought his mistress to the dinner table..

All the comments on liberal websites treat Swartzenagger as if he was/is the poster child of right-wing/christian values- Yet he was always a Rockefeller Republican

Technical point, but 0% of men are "Kennedys". Men honor their commitments. Overgrown boys are "Kennedys", and unfortunately their numbers are growing.

We've entered an era where the label of "pimp" is considered a compliment instead of a deadly insult, and guys like Rob Kardashian who live on money earned by others are considered fashionable instead of embarrassing. In this world, Arnold's doings are nothing out of the ordinary.

I heard 10 years but the report may have been imprecise. I agree that the ability to hide this child is a mystery. He hid it from many close to him along with reporters hungry for stories like this. Obviously, he must have paid his former lover well and provided for his child. It is difficult to understand how he hid the payments and other dealings especially as governor.

I wonder if his child knew his father. Even if the child knew his father, he would have been required to keep quiet. It is unconscionable that AS did not publically acknowledge his child to provide a normal relationship with him during his formative years. The affair and pregnancy is only a side show. The main issue is his responsibility to his child.

In her defense, Maria Shriver has shown some class. Yeah, she fell for the Hollywood storybook hunk... Yeah, she's a flaming leftist who whispered in Arnold's ear... Yeah, she believes in "noblesse oblige" with other people's money... But despite the obvious opportunity to take a lot more of the limelight than she has, she's kept pretty quiet, quite apparently putting her focus on her family.

OK, so she was a stupid blind liberal who trusted her loudmouth hunk of a husband, obsessed with the trappings of power with which to impress his tyrannical father. At least she's not a drunk like so much of her family and it looks to me like she's raised a decent group of kids. And does this ever really suck for them. I'd bet she's never cheated on him.
