War: Spud industry resists USDA effort to yank potatoes from school lunches

Remember when food was tasty and being a kid was fun?

In my own hazy, rose-colored memories of lunchtime at school, we used to eat ice-cream pizza with french-fried sprinkles. Learning was a pleasure.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is proposing to eliminate the “white potato”—defined as any variety but the sweet potato—from federally subsidized school breakfasts and to limit them sharply at lunch…

With the USDA set to release final rules in coming months, and put them into effect in the 2012-2013 school year, the National Potato Council in Washington, D.C., is urging the “entire potato industry” to mobilize.

In its “Tell USDA to Keep Potatoes in Schools!” campaign, the National Potato Council calls the spud affordable and “kid pleasing,” adding “familiar shapes make lunchtime fun.” It bills potatoes as a “gateway,” that can introduce students to other vegetables “in, around, and on top of the potato.” The Maine Potato Board similarly touts the spud as a “conduit” veggie, which because of its “immense popularity” can propel people to eat broccoli or spinach as toppings…

Could it be because sweet potatoes are now Monsanto Round up Ready GMO poisoned vegetables? The VP of Monsanto is one of Barky’s Cabinet members, this is just like GE and the lightbulb idiocy. Can we say payoff?

Ummmm, OK, I give. What’s wrong with a potato? (probably the world’s most common and oldest food source)

Just had lamb chops, taters, and green beans for dinner. Am I going to die or get cancer or some other crazy thing the Libs came up with?

Yes, the white potato is racist if you peel its brown skin off before cooking!

Just the idea that somewhere, somehow, someplace in our Constitution it says anything about the federal government has any business telling us what to eat is bizarre. Isn't there someone out there, especially in Congress, that can de-fund this USDA monstrosity and stop this crap?

Didn't we just virtually overhaul Congress to our advantage to stop this stuff?

Is the Tea Party over and everyone went home? Defund these bastards and tell them and Mooch-elle to stay the hell out of our dining rooms.

Eat grass, the Chinese and Indians will buy our spuds. Abolish the departments of Agriculture, Education, Energy, Homeland Security and the game of golf for any elected official. The high risk of a lightening strike is simply unacceptable.

Where in the U.S. Constitution does it say the federal government has the authority to regulate the consumption of potatoes in school cafeterias? This is the limit. Hey, gubmint, leave those kids alone. The people in Idaho must be fit to be tied.

This is old time Democrat country in NE Carolina, and it is also big-time potato country. We have many millionaires who owe everything they have to the spud. Interestingly, I haven't heard a word about this federal attack on the potato. If a Republican was in he WH, I bet they would be howling from the rooftops.

What!?!?

No mashed potatoes and hamburger gravy at school lunch anymore?

Will they also eliminate those wonderful "homemade" yeast rolls smothered in butter?

Will they treat white rice in the same manner...or anything and all refined carbohydrates?

Can you still send a lunch to school with your kids?

Really, the only problem I have with this is that potatoes are being singled out when they are far healthier than white rice, refined sugar and white flour.

I would never want my kid to eat what I had to eat in the school cafeteria. Junk. Awful stuff from a health point of view.

Oh, and the fact that darn near every school cafeteria in the country is "federally subsidized" and therefore subject to federal rule-making.

That reminds me of the old joke about Stanley Ann Dunham.

Why is she not like a white potato?

It’s official now. We ARE being farmed as sustenance for the elitists of the Socialist Government. This is another step towards healthcare of the slaves.

They intend to weed out those that cannot for whatever reason in their opinion serve them, and provide for the health and well being of those that can.

If they relabel them as “brown potatoes” the Leftists will be happy!

"Where in the U.S. Constitution does it say the federal government has the authority to regulate the consumption of potatoes in school cafeterias"

That's not what they are doing.

They are making a regulatory ruling that they will only subsidize those cafeterias that follow their rules. Any school district...or state...can refuse that money and serve whatever they choose. They could even choose to serve nothing at all.

You take Uncle Sugar's money then you have to play by his rules.

Of course, he took it from you before he wrapped all those rules around it and gave it back.

It would be easier if the sorry-assed bureaucrats just approved only broccoli for school lunch.

The USDA has ignored its own nutrition database, which indicates great nutritional value in white potatoes.
