Allen West Gives Thumbs Down To Gingrich's Call To Bring Back Voter Literacy Tests

Newt Gingrich is facing criticism for yet another idea he has floated during his presidential campaign -- that the country bring back tests for voting, which were banned by the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as a tool used to suppress African-American voters. Now, Think Progress reports, none other than Tea Party favorite Rep. Allen West (R-FL), an African-American, is disagreeing -- and referring to the sort of discrimination that his own parents faced.

From Chariots of Fire:

Reverend. J.D. Liddell: Sandy, the kingdom of God is not a democracy. The Lord never seeks reelection. There’s no discussion, no deliberation, no referanda as to which road to take. There’s one right, one wrong. One absolute ruler.

Sandy: A dictator, you mean?

Reverend J.D. Liddell: Aye, but a benign, loving dictator.

The "article" is from "Think Progress."

I wouldn't trust a single word of what this vile dirtbag writer says Newt, Col. West or anyone else has to say on anything.

Did anyone actually listen to what Gingrich said?

No, they'd rather believe a lefty blogger's version than hear the words for themselves.

I do not believe that literacy should be one of the requirements.

I don't understand, are you saying that in order to vote you don't believe we need the ability to read or write? I'm sorry, maybe you were just being sarcastic and I didn't catch it.

I must be missing something. I see a lesson plan, but not the questions...

What the heck is going on with Mr. Gingrich. It is as if he is just saying things to make Republicans look bad I don't get it. Hey Newt how about showing an ID when you vote
that would be a start.

So being an informed and educated citizen is an exclusive province of the white devils?

The point is that white voters were given a pass. Look up the origin of the term "Grandfather Clause." Passed in seven southern states after the end of Reconstruction, it stated that voters whose grandfathers were eligible to vote before 1867 were exempt from taking the test.

The first test should be citizenship.. not literacy..
Just being here IS NOT citizenship..

Gingrich can’t hold a candle to the greatest female speech maker in American history.

What would the answer have been in 1965?

This is his good buddy Boortz’s idea. He had to throw Boortz a bone since he hasn’t been vocal in support of Boortz’s fair tax baby.

It is obligatory on this site (or should be) to always note that it was the Democrat Party that began, ran, and fought for segregation and the curtailment of the rights of freed Negroes for 100 years. It was the Republican Party, the Party of Abolition, that set the slaves free and tried to integrate them during Reconstruction, a period no longer talked about by black politicians.

Repeat. There is nothing wrong with literacy tests for voters. It's all in how they are administered. For example, in New England the literacy tests were handled with fairness, but they were given in English. If you did not speak English, you could not pass the test. Which come to think of it, wasn't all that bad an idea.

The Republican Party must do something about vote fraud, part of which is last-minute registrations of a highly fraudulent nature. A fair literacy test, administered well before elections, with preparation materials and ample opportunity for do-overs would certainly help give us a more informed and honest electorate.

Doing away with Literacy Testing because it was abused in the Democrat South is a classic case of "Throwing Baby Out with the Bath Water."

Newt’s plan would discriminate against stupid people. That is OK by me.

"No state or federal employee would have the right to vote."

You'd disenfranchise the military that protects your right to vote?

I was a college junior in 1964 when I first went to register to vote in Alabama. I was given a written test in which sections of the Constitution had to be read and questions about the meaning of what was read had to be answered. There was a failing score.

I’m a white guy and I don’t think I was given an easy test at all.

It disappointed me when this requirement was done away in 1965 by our beloved Congress, since I firmly believe that if one cannot read the English language well he or she cannot follow essential information about an election. That is, unless you think the television networks provide comprehensive information on candidates and their stances.

“No state or federal employee would have the right to vote.” Would employees of companies that sell to state and the federal government be similarly prohibited?
