The snark on this thread is not justified.
This is not an article about global warming, but about a natural phenomena.
Solar activity and its effect on earth is well-documented but not well-understood, and apparently something we’ll continue to learn through experience.
It’s nothing to laugh at. But I will be laughing when it does hit and everyone cellphones go out.
” The snark on this thread is not justified. “
The ‘snark’, as you call it, is an attempt to address, with humor, (of varying degrees of effectiveness) the larger, and more immediate, tragedy of the insistence by our ‘betters’ on politicizing anything and everything - especially ‘natural phenomena’ which are, by any logical assessment, non-political....
Indeed looks like may have never heard of the Carrington Event of 1859 in which a soloar flare occured that was so strong it shocked telegraph lines melt lines and started fires even after batteries were disconnected. Now consider how much wire could have possibly have been hung in 1859 compared to today.

To: jda The snark on this thread is not justified. You will eat those words someday. This is not an article about global warming, but about a natural phenomena.
BTW, the new buzz word is "altered climate" it's no longer global warming or climate change.
You're right, of course, and no "snark" is warranted.
An intense solar storm occurred in 1859 and severely upset the telegraph system (in its infancy) in this country. I would imagine that the early telegraph systems were rather rugged and beefy. Imagine what could happen in this era of computers and electronics. I believe that, should an event as severe as that of 1859 were to occur today, communications and electronics of all kinds might be interrupted worldwide. There are some local safeguard that can be taken such as a well grounded screen room or Faraday cage, but it would be impossible to protect everything. Should something like this happen recovery would probably take years, if ever. Imagine a world where your telephones doesn't work, your car won't start and there's no electricity.

Good grief! There are several FReepers who feel it is their duty to police everything that doesn't quite strike them right - misspelled words, dangling participles, snarks that they don't understand, non-sequiturs, etc., etc., etc. You sound like liberals - mad at everyone and feeling victimized by everything.
Conservatives should be a light to drive out the darkness, a breath of fresh air. And, especially when it comes to fellow conservatives - lighten up!,
P.S. The "snark" was to tweak our climatist friends who seem to blame everything on global warming.
And it happens every 11 years regular as clockwork. So we have had plenty of experience with it.
Snark is totally justified. NOAA’s own predictions of the strength of the upcoming solar maximum have dropped and dropped and dropped over the past few years. Check out http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/12/27/nasas-sunspot-prediction-roller-coaster/
I agree the snark is a bit much for a serious situation but after Y2K and global warming can you blame anyone for being snarky?
What world power in history committed suicide because they felt guilty about being powerful? How many years have we listened, and frequently been blamed, for "environmental disaster" within some nebulous "few years?"
How about rounding up every bald old man with a pony tail and Birkenstocks, and withered old woman with waist length hair and that Dachau look so popular with vegetarians, and going ape$hit with a samurai sword, until the streets look like league night at a bowling alley?
I prefer option B, but you will pardon our use of option A...
If there is a solar EMT event, say, on the 21st of May, or on 12/21/2012, there isn’t enough Mylar in the world to prevent a system frying crash, but I don’t believe ammo will be affected...
If you get intelligent discourse from 2 people on a thread, you are doing good.
90% of Freepers don’t read the articles. They just spout off. They read the title and then spout off about this because they assume the article is about global warming.
Of the 10% who read the article, you are lucky if you get 5 posting on it. Of those, 2 will have something to really contribute or at least try to connect and relate regarding the subject matter.
This is FreeRepublic. You have to have a thick skin and get ignore the 95% of all posts on any thread that are just regurgitated tripe.
I undestand that the sun has still remained unusually quiet at a time that we should be seeing increased sunspots.
