The chief of the International Monetary Fund is behind bars at Rikers Island after his arraignment on charges of trying to rape a maid, and prosecutors said they were investigating at least one other similar allegation against Dominique Strauss-Kahn at the same hotel.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a likely French presidential candidate and a married father of four whose reputation with women earned him the nickname "the great seducer," was formally charged Monday in the alleged weekend assault.

He will remain jailed at Rikers at least until his next court hearing on Friday...

...Assistant District Attorney John A. McConnell acknowledged in court Monday that New York authorities are investigating at least one other case of "conduct similar to the conduct alleged" at the Sofitel.

As I understand it, he was staying in a $ 3,000 a night suite at the Sofitel in New York. Now, JUST WHO is paying for this??? As I understand it, the US taxpayer foots the bill for much, if not most of the International Monetary Fund budget; WHO among the Republicans on Capitol Hill is talking about ending this outrage?? He can stay in a very nice hotel in Manhattan for $ 250 and he might not have gotten into all this trouble.

it's a long way from the Sofitel to Rikers. He may find just as much action at Rikers but I don't think he'll like it as much

It was reported he paid for the hotel with his personal credit card, upon checking out. This was a personal visit to NYC. This is why the IMF has refused to request immunity.

I'm guessing his money and his power were the real "great seducer." Not that it's much of a distinction; he may now find that "the menu options have changed."

it's a long way from the Sofitel to Rikers.

Depending on traffic, it's about 45 minutes. :)

From a $3,000-a-night suite at the Sofitel Hotel to a lonely cell at Rikers Island prison - it’s a bit of a come down by anyone’s standards.

But that is what disgraced IMF boss Dominique Strauss-Khan is facing tonight after he was refused $1million bail at Manhattan’s Criminal Court house this morning.

Rikers, a 415-acre complex of 10 prisons, is tucked away on an island between Queens and the Bronx.

It houses some 14,000 male and female prisoners at any one time, employs 10,000 officers and costs the New York tax payer $860million a year to run.

The jail facilities are for temporary inmates or those serving city sentences of one year or less.
Previous occupants have included
Mark David Chapman, who murdered John Lennon, and Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicous, who spent 55 days there for assault. Rapper Foxy Brown also spent time there for assault.

They have two options for inmates. They either stay in barracks-style dorms with rows of beds or they are in a single cell on their own.

Strauss-Khan is being housed in the West Facility of the complex in single cell on his own, according to a prison spokesman.

The wing ordinarily houses inmates who have ‘contagious diseases.’

But the spokesman said it was the best place for officers to be able to give him the most protection from other inmates.

He will eat eat his meals alone and spend his recreation time alone, he added.

In essence Strauss-Khan is in solidarity confinement.

I am just floored by the arrogance of this guy. How in the world did he think he could just attack the maid and get away with it? My fiancee’ said it best. “This guy Kahn is a perfect example of how power corrupts” He thinks he is entitled to rape the maid and then merrily board a flight for Paris. I hope this creep gets 20 years.

"The charges stunned the global financial world and upended French presidential politics."

Oh the French are just a bunch of sexually repressed puritans!

According to Wikipedia, his family is of mixed Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish origin.

He did live in Morocco for ~9 years when he was a child, so maybe he picked up the attitude then.

It takes a strong man to handle true power.

Notice we never got any scandals like this out of the Bush administration.
