Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) admitted for the first time on May 15 that most of the fuel in one of its nuclear reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant had melted only about 16 hours after the March 11 earthquake struck a wide swath of northeastern Japan and triggered a devastating tsunami.

It's okay folks to ask questions, and not buy what you are being told.

From the Ex-SKF blogger who is still in the process of translating a recent Japanese news article.
Asahi Shinbun, one of the MSM in Japan, says in the article published at 3:01AM JST 5/17/2011 that core meltdown may have occurred in the Reactors 2 and 3 at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, according to the data that TEPCO disclosed on May 16.
They are still analyzing the recent data dump.
I guess we weren’t so crazy after all, thinking this was a lot more serious than the “experts” here were telling us.
Lesson: Trust your bellyometer:)
Continued good wishes and prayers for Japan.
Unreal and notice how quiet the media and news are about it?
If Bush was in office, then they would be hammering him.
The way the Media and Press works is as follows. If bad news ignore or blame Tea Party/Republicans/Conservatives. If good news, then it’s because of Obama. That is how they do things. The are completely compromised and can no longer be trusted. They are ACTIVIST and not Journalist/Reporters.
If we had a true free and objective press, then a lot of our problems would either not exist or not be as bad as they are. What we use to trust in the media and press is nothing but government news.
My suspicion is that there is a war within the government and it’s agencies.
So what? The fuel is slag in the bottom of a containment vessel.......is everyone on the West coast dead yet?
imagine the tactical advantage if blabermouth obama had kept his mouth shut about obama.
no phones, no computer communication,
just hand to hand couriers.
blabermouth obama could have had DAYS where the enemy did not know we had osama’s hard drives and notebooks.
The experts here were ALL still right. Chicken-littleism is never helpful. Those who engaged in it then are STILL wrong now.
Amen, bro!
So, it's not a problem unless it kills everyone 5000 miles away?
Last I heard, any illnesses from the released radiation would take years to become evident.
Making out like this is no big deal, helps no one and proves nothing.
Sorry pal. Nuclear power is dead. Deader then dead. We knew that over a month ago when the head executive for the worlds largest nuclear power company (French) stated that nuclear power might may a come back in 10-20 years. That horse is dead Jim and you wont win any friends flogging it any more.
It is a psychological thing. That is how some people deal with a crisis. They are typically the same people who do absolutely no disaster preparedness planning.
You do know that the Japanese just recently expanded the evacuation zone ? That is usually not a sign that things are improving.
“Last I heard, any illnesses from the released radiation would take years to become evident.”
Last I heard, that’s BS. Take 8 minutes and educate yourself..all these 70 year old men, sitting 20 miles from Britain’s first H-Bomb test look rather healthy, happy and prosperous.

I love how these articles are written.
“...admits...”
They got a sea full of water dumped in on their heads, electrical instrumentation doubtless failed. Now that they’re getting instrumentation back online and replaced/repaired/supplanted, data that comes out from the new instrumentation is an “admission.”
What a pantload of fertilizer these liberal arts majors are in the press. They couldn’t even describe to me (or any other engineer or physicist) what the difference between ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation is, and now they’re acting all prosecutorial in the press.
Morons.
BTW - this development is consistent with what happened in Three Mile Island: The TMI core slagged down in the early hours of the situation, and all the henny-penny run-in-circles-scream-and-shout for days afterwards was utterly superfluous. When they got the reactor vessel out to Idaho Falls, they found that there was a wad of material on the bottom of the reactor vessel and that it was nowhere near the point of breaching the vessel.
I also pointed this out here on FR - ie, that TMI’s reactor had slagged down and was resting on the bottom of the vessel, and came nowhere close to melting through.
Asahi Shinbun: Core Meltdown in Reactors 2 and 3 at #Fukushima
Incorrect. TMI broke out of the RPV at one of the seals for the control rod box assemblies. It was contained within the control rod box and did not breach. What we have here is 3 reactors that have broken out at those seals. They are the same seals (silver welds actually) and the corium is flowing down below the RPV's. That is a given now.
