Trend: Dropouts might lose drivers licenses

Lawmakers around the country are looking at a new way to keep kids in school not letting them get a drivers license if they drop out.
Although Minnesota's law states that students only have to stay in school until they are 16, lawmakers there are considering a bill that would not allow school dropouts to get their license, the StarTribune reported on Tuesday.
"Driving is not a right, it's a privilege, and it's perfectly within bounds for the state government to expect a quid pro quo when it comes to extending privileges," the paper quoted the bill sponsor as saying.
South Carolina is also trying to encourage its students to stay in school by considering a bill this session that would take away students' drivers licenses if they skip too many classes or drop out, Fox Carolina reported.
And the Clark County School Board in Nevada asked lawmakers to consider creating a law that would only allow students who pass their classes and don't drop out of high school to get a license, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

First it was dead beat parents.
Now we’ll have dead beat students!
Maybe they are not too stupid. This looks like another way to fix a societal problem with legislation. Taking a kid who is already having trouble, and denying him the right to transport himself even to the burger flipping job doesn’t sound very farsighted to me.
“If they can’t make it through high school, maybe they’re too stupid to drive”.
We are talking about taking away a privilege based on nothing but a high school degree. Not too many points, driving while intoxicated etc... What’s next? No driver license if you don’t have a college degree? No driver’s license if you aren’t currently employed? This is insanity.
Everytime I figure these frigging politicians have dobne all the stupid shit they can they up and surprise me again.

Some students are better off working for a couple of years, so they mature.
I really don’t see the advantage of forcing somebody to be there if they don’t want to and aren’t going to accomplish anything while there.
It’s obvious these “lawmakers” have too much time on their hands and need to further control everyones lives.
yeah this ranks right up there with take their license away if they don’t pay child support, thereby guaranteeing they have challenges transporting to a job...........
Sorry about the double post, fingers to big for the keyboard.
Strange law.
Emancipated adults have lost more rights since the Civil Rights movement than one would have thought.
If the kid drops out, and emancipates himself from his parents, and is therefor an adult in the eyes of the law, how can the state justify denying him the privilege to drive to and from work to be self sustaining individual?
There are similar laws in other spheres of our lives (up until recently), in some states a minor child could not get individual health insurance, however if the child was of age and filed papers with the court to become emancipated, he/she could then acquire health insurance.
Law was another do-gooder scheme to prevent parents from buying insurance just for the child and not the adults in the family group, however it caused huge problems for divorced and separated families where one guardian paying child support lived out of state or overseas, while the custodial guardian didn’t want to buy health insurance for herself.. so the kid ended up without insurance.
Not everybody drops out because they aren’t motivated. I dropped out because I was essentially forced out by the other students.

Tell that to drivers here in L.A. MOST don’t even deserve a drivers license.
It's about control.
Fewer kids in school means less money from Uncle Sugar.

how about the freedom to drop out of high school and do what you want? I learned a lot in 9th and 10th grade and basically nothing in 11-12th.
