Lawmakers around the country are looking at a new way to keep kids in school not letting them get a drivers license if they drop out.
Although Minnesota's law states that students only have to stay in school until they are 16, lawmakers there are considering a bill that would not allow school dropouts to get their license, the StarTribune reported on Tuesday.
"Driving is not a right, it's a privilege, and it's perfectly within bounds for the state government to expect a quid pro quo when it comes to extending privileges," the paper quoted the bill sponsor as saying.
South Carolina is also trying to encourage its students to stay in school by considering a bill this session that would take away students' drivers licenses if they skip too many classes or drop out, Fox Carolina reported.
And the Clark County School Board in Nevada asked lawmakers to consider creating a law that would only allow students who pass their classes and don't drop out of high school to get a license, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Many people hear the initial idea and think, “that’s a good idea”. However, I choose to look more down the line. If they can deny a driver’s license based on level of education, then they can increase that level. Not only with the amount of education but other things like employment. I am sure there is some person in government thinking, “stay at home Moms don’t really need licenses” or “you don’t need a license if public transportation is available to you”. Scary when even some FReepers think taking away a privilege based on nothing is a good idea.
But the whole goal of government is to criminalize every action the law abiding otherwise there wouldn’t be any job security for those who work in the criminal justice system!
A better law would be to make high school optional if a student could read and write at a basic level, as well as do math up to algebra.
Seriously, have you ever noticed how busy the roads are in the summer, or on weekends, as opposed to during school hours?
That’s a good part of why I dropped out of school - so I could work to pay CS. That and I got screwed by a teacher that had a vendetta for me (1/8 of a credit I would have to go to summer school for 4 hours a day all summer to get back - all over a paper of mine that he lost).
I wasn’t accomplishing anything in school other than developing a poor attitude towards people of power (I.E. teachers and principals).
Taking a kid who is already having trouble, and denying him the right to transport himself even to the burger flipping job doesnt sound very farsighted to me.
But, more importantly for the dimdems is will the drop out student still be voting democrat! That’s all that’s really important to them,
these lawmakers must have a LOT of time on their hands to come up with this nonsense

Do you have to openly curse in your posts?
while the illegals skate. Where's the outrage like there was for AZ wanting to request proof of legal residency from drivers stopped for violations?
“Everything they do decreases our freedom that much more”
Absolutely. I know one person who dropped out of high school. He was a master carpenter who had worked with his father since very young. After sophomore year, he figured that he knew exactly what he wanted to do in life and wanted to start doing it then. He runs his own company (with his two brothers) and is very successful. The idea of forcing someone to stay in school is ridiculous. We are truly becoming a country living in a dictatorship.
Just you wait, it will happen. If they can do it here, they can do the same for those without a college degree.
What’s next? I’ll tell you what is next.
Smoker eh? No obamacare for you.
Eat Doublecheese burgers eh? No obamacare for you.
A little overweight? No obamacare for you...
Yea, they want those last couple of years to indoctrinate those kids more..next step, no drivers license for home schooled kids!
Unfortunately, it won't stop them from driving. It hasn't seemed to stop the illegal aliens from crashing into us.
why not just say they are imposing slavery and be done with it.
I’d rather they focus on eliminating welfare than taking a license.
AbsoF***ckinglotely.
This law is stoopid beyond belief
