Its hard not to conclude that one of the most storied families in Missouri political history is on a downward slide.
Rep. Russ Carnahan of St. Louis got about as much love as cold pot pie in the recent redistricting battles in the Capitol.
Secretary of State Robin Carnahan was trounced badly by Republican Roy Blunt in last years Senate race. Remember? It was 54 to 41 percent.
The matriarch, Jean Carnahan, was nipped at the wire in the 2002 U.S. Senate race by Republican Jim Talent. The count: 50 to 49 percent.
You hear it all over the Capitol from Democrats and Republicans alike: The sheen is gone. The dynasty is over.
Nothing personifies it as starkly as the Russ Carnahan fight-for-his-political-life in the redistricting wars. He was the odd man out as Missouri redrew its congressional lines to reflect eight seats instead of the nine the state has had for three decades.
Arguably, Democrats from Gov. Jay Nixon on down did little to save him. Carnahans troubles can be attributed in part to bad luck. Of Missouris remaining three Democratic congressmen, two Emanuel Cleaver and Lacy Clay are African-American, and that gave them an edge.
It also didnt help Carnahan that Republicans dominate the General Assembly these days, meaning they had first shot at configuring the districts.

Missouri carnahan ping.
Democrats can’t run on their party affiliation. They’ve got to run on their family affiliation.
I wouldn’t count them out, but I wish they would go away and take the McCains with them.
They are of the same ilk as the Daleys.
Rusty would’ve been out of his own seat had a Libertarian not taken the crucial small amount of votes from the Republican.
You might have once said that about Ike Skelton...
The Carnahans are a cartel.
I can’t believe that old coot is still around. I still laff at his sorry, cue carded campaign commercials from 1976
“Hi, I’m Ike Skelton . . . government should ‘help’ people”
Just as Dr King envisioned.... oh wait....
The Democrats made the rule that Blacks, once elected, are entitled to office for life and can then bequeath that office to their heirs. They don’t like it when it bites them in the behind. Kraske is still upset that he and his urban elite buddies from Kansas City and St. Louis can no longer run the state by fiat. These little left wing enclave are going to be increasingly isolated.
as a republican I would donate to Rusty to take on Lacey Clay in a primary. Nothing would be better then seeing Clay defeated in the 1st District of Missouri. My folks lived in Creve Coeur and have had to deal with Lacey or Bill Clay for 25 years. Its time for that dynansty to end too.
Fortunatly they are now in Todd Akin’s district with the redistricting that just occured. If Todd goes for the Senate seat held by Air Claire then perhaps Jane Cunningham will run for Todd’s seat. There is a goofball named Martin who could split the district.
