The smell of Toledo's improving? Boarded up windows and steel bars abound. It's becoming Detroit south. Even famous Tony Packo's restaurant is in receivership proceedings.

I grew up in Toledo and the beaches ALWAYS smelled like dead fish. I grew up in Toledo too, but married and moved far away when I was young (a blessing for which I am thankful). It's a democrat city decaying rapidly.

This could be related to the heavy rains washing more mud and pollutants into the area around the Maumee and other rivers draining agricultural lands. The western basin is shallower than the east, and the water quality may be suffering.
Then again, Lake Erie fishing has become a very robust enterprise and a few thousand fish more or less won't make a dent in the overall take.
