Where Are the Human Rights Groups? Where Are the Media?
Hudson New York ^ | May 13, 2011 | Khaled Abu Toameh

Assaults on writers and journalists in the Arab world are not uncommon, but the case of the Yemeni poet who just had his tongue cut out appears to be one of the most horrifying crimes against those who dare to express their views in public.

The poet, Walid al-Ramishi, was kidnapped by armed gangsters in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa. The kidnappers released him after they had cut out his tongue.

Al-Ramishi is now being treated in a Jordanian hospital, where doctors say he would not be able to talk again.

His alleged crime: he had written a poem in praise of embattled Yemeni dictator Ali Abdallah Saleh.

Abdel Salam al-Qabsi, a prominent Yemeni poet, condemned the gruesome assault, noting that it was the latest in a string of attacks on writers and intellectuals in his country.

In the past few weeks, a number of writers and intellectual figures were targeted by unknown assailants in broad daylight in Yemen.

Some say the attackers belonged to the government, while others have pointed a blaming finger at opposition groups.

The most recent victims included three women novelists: Bushra al-Maqtari, Huda al-Attas and Arwa Othman. The three women were beaten during anti-government protests in the Yemeni capital.

The assault on al-Ramishi, whose tongue was cut out, has been almost entirely ignored by the mainstream media and human rights organizations in the West.

Even the media in the Arab world, which is controlled by repressive Arab regimes, has ignored the tragedy of the Yemeni poet.

Hat Tip:

In another post he writes:

"For most of the media, truth is not as important as maintaining memes. And the memes that Arabs are only protesting things from a political and not religious perspective, and that they are only protesting against Israel and not Jews, are too strong to let some pesky facts shoot them down."

Same thing here.

The "Arab Spring" is a good thing. It cannot be defiled by gruesome and utterly detestable actions like the one described in the Khaled Abu Toameh's article above. And therefore most "journalists" don't write about it. And then it did not happen. And why write about something that did not happen?

See how easy it is to be a good journalist?! /s

NPR did a story just a day or so ago about Tunisia. The wonderful, peaceful revolution in January has -- quite unaccountably -- turned into a bit of an ugly mess. There is repression. There is fundamentalism. Many in Tunisia are afraid of what their country is becoming.

What a surprise! [/s]

I figure all the countries will go this way. The Arab Spring seemed good to people with wool in their heads, but I think radical jihadists will be the only real beneficiaries.

In American the left doesn’t cut out your tongue. They ruin your career and reputation through political correctness.

“attacks on writers and intellectuals in his country.”

Asinine Libtard babbling, not to forget the obvious contradiction in the implication that the Moslim world can have an “intellectual” in the first place.

The Queeran demands the death of anyone who does not follow every last bit of MadMo’s contradictory chatterings.

In the strictly Moslim sense, the cutting out of that Moslim’s tongue was merciful, as the usual punishment is death.

Remember that Islam is serious about destroying the West and imposing Sharia Law on America and the rest of the world.

Honor The Threat! Moslims mean what they say, and 1,400 years of their constant attacks on non-Moslims proves they are committed to destroying us.

Islam Delenda Est! Because of what Islam is and what Moslims do.

If you doubt this, I have but one question for you - Got tongue?

Oh, and one question for your wife and daughters - Got burqua?

This behavior is OK because President Obama does not condemn it.

It’s not as important as say, condemning white cops in Cambridge Mass.

Only the Arabs would be so stupid as to cut the tongue out of a WRITER.

But it’s a terrible story; what monsters.

Well spotted, Miss.

However, since the literacy rate in Yemen hovers around 50% I guess a poet/writer may be expected to recite his oeuvres to the non-reading population.

Anyway, as you wrote; a terrible story and they really are monsters.

Hmmm, not quite like Homer, I think. More like the Arab poet portrayed in the latest LATMA satire

Enjoy! (Poet ca 1:38 - 2:35)
