Government to send wireless messages to everyone with a mobile device.
The government has your cell phone number, and its going to send you text messages whether you like it or not. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski joined Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator W. Craig Fugate in New York City on Tuesday to announce a multimillion dollar federal program that, in theory, will notify mobile phone users in times of grave emergency. Like so many Washington-centric ideas, this one was obsolete long before it got off the drawing board.
Wireless phone providers have agreed to distribute Homeland Security messages that will automatically pop up on cell phone screens whenever a government agency determines there is a threat or disaster in the vicinity of the phone user. Notifications include alerts whenever a child is reported missing, which often happens during custody fights between family members. Customers must actively opt-out of these features if they do not want to be disturbed while going about their business, but there will be no way to suppress unwanted communications from the president.
That means, while driving along, a special emergency ring tone might sound on phones nationwide. In 31 states, plus the District, reading that urgent notification while behind the wheel could set the user up to be ticketed for violating anti-text messaging laws. Thats a sign that maybe, just maybe, this feel-good scheme hasnt been fully thought through.
In 2006, Congress dreamed the idea of requiring federal agencies to come up with a national alert system that would serve as an updated version of the warning system already in place for broadcast television. When the legislation was first introduced, iPhones did not exist and Twitter was in its infancy.

So, will ti accept return messages, like GFY BO ?
One of the first things we lost after Katrina was cell phone service.
An election day reminder only in left-leaning regions? Don’t put it past them. They’ll say it was meant for everyone but a glitch in the system caused it to go to the large cities but it somehow missed the rural areas.
Of course the taxpayers are going to have to provide free cell phones to the “poor and trodden down” who can’t afford to purchase one with their own money.
1st terror warning:
“Republicans could take control of Senate in next election!”
How wonderful. Cell phone turned off while driving and then suddenly I’m getting a text from ‘himself’ telling me that a hurricane is on the way.
What a brilliant idea.
Is there anyone in the administration that has two brain cells to call their own?
Gummint insisting that even without cell phone service these messages will still go through.
Hhmmnnn?????????
What’s a cell phone?
We already do.
Quite Orwellian.
That's already in place, see Obamaphones. Seriously, no joke, the federal government has a free phone program.
Big Bro and Big Sis, hard at work stealing your rights and liberties!
It would be great if one could program their phone to do that.
The poor are the first ones to have cell phones.
I know poor people that have first rate computers, huge TVs and all of the newest gadgets and still can’t afford to pay for their children’s school lunches.
And yet, according to the commie ‘RATS, “the poor” can’t come up with a photo I.D. to vote because they are too “poor” to afford one.
Don’t nobama cultrue already get free nobama phone and free unlimited nobama minutes?
This was part of Reparations or Stimulas or some other BullShi’te gubmint giveaway.
