Last week we asked our readers to vote for their favorite ballad or slow jam of all time. Votes were all over the place from tracks by Pearl Jam to Elvis Presley to Lionel Richie. In the end it was very close, and there was a tie so we had to expand our standard top 10 to a top 12. If this survey has reinforced anything, it's that our readers really, really love Led Zeppelin.

At least on Bohemian Rhapsody the group was one with the song; they played the instruments and did backing vocals. It was Queen.
Beth, on the other hand, was sung by Peter Criss, with session musicians on piano and strings. Criss was backed by a tape in concert. The other members of KISS had zilch to do with the song.
OK then. Thanks for the lesson.
Bonnie Raitt and Andrea Bocelli are 2 performers who will sing with just about anyone. And the result is sometimes exceptional.
And Elton John actually did a lot of live performances very early in his career on British TV. Just him and his piano...the man had chops.
The live performances without any “post production” separate the talented from the “equipment dependent” performers.
An example:
4 Norwegian guys doing an acoustic version of Hallelujah on a British TV show...
(A "chills" warning when the last guy sings.)
I saw Queen in concert, and during Bohemian Rhapsody, when it got to the heavily overdubbed section of the song...they played a tape.
Did Brian May play the guitar solo at the end?
I honestly don’t remember...I was so anticipating how they would handle all the overdubbing in a live situation, that when it came to that part and they rolled the tape...I was crushed. I was hoping for a more creative solution. I was so disappointed, I don’t remember what happened after that.
Well, read the first page and no one even mentioned “Simple Man” by Skinnard, so this isn’t even a serious thread.
That would be a real let down.
Absolutly, and Old Blue Jeans-ZZ Top
Yes, Eva Cassidy does have that draw-you-in quality.
There are some other singers with that quality, though having voices far, far afield from a pure sound. To me, some of the best performances come from the worst sounding voices. Not all of their songs - but a few can tear at your heart. Tom Waits’ singing “Soldier’s Things”; John Cash singing “Hurt”. As you said, straight from the heart.
Loreena McKennitt is another with that purity of sound, though she doesn’t have the earthy emotion of Eva Cassidy. Many of McKennitt’s compositions are a marriage of the Scottish/Irish influence with a middle eastern flavor. One of her most moving pieces is “Dante’s Prayer” - about her fiance who drowned.
Another performer who completely stuns me is that 10-year old child, Jackie Evancho. I compared her singing of “O Mio Babbino Caro” to the You Tube clips of every established opera singer performing it, and was amazed-to-goose bumps that the quality of her emotion and expression surpasses all of them. She lilts into the high notes with pure grace - no slur, no hesitation, none of that subtle yet sudden mini-burst of volume the pros exhibit with their universal aura of “I hope I make it”. The little girl still sings with pure emotion, rather than “performing” Mio Babbino, as the pros do. Pretty amazing.
Yes.
WOW.
Thanks for posting it.
Getting an introduction today to some great music. This is terrific. I’ve never heard anything but a Christmas album of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and didn’t care that much for it. THIS piece is a whole ‘nother story.
I miss having songs with lyrics I can clearly understand and make a point with a great tune behind it. The 5th Dimension is a very under rated band because of the Doors and Hendrix stuff of the day.
That looks like the back fence of the car corral at Carlisle. The ‘66 Polara wagons had a cool rear air conditioning system that was in the roof between the rear and third seat.
We too listen to our DishTV music too..in fact we’re going to right now
get wifey some Coffee and Cointreau
baby asleep...other kids spending nite at friend’s home
maybe she’ll table top to AC DC or The Smiths (her fav...she’s 8 years younger)
lol...wish me luck
Just tell 'em it's Dumbledore singing.
I'd add Ammonia Avenue.
I had a full response but was pre-empted. The Polara was just a picture as our original was traded for a new 73’ Royal. The other road car was a 1963 Electra 225 loaded.
Every campground from Fairbanks to Knoxville was assaulted with 7 children and 2 drivers in 1965.
Finally figured out where to find the links for You Tube, so for anyone interested, here they are for some great performances which I mantioned in other posts n this thread:
