WaPo: Family Visitations For Gitmo Detainees Under Consideration

Yeah, I know what you’re probably thinking… “Gitmo’s still open?” From the Washington Post: "The Pentagon is considering allowing the families of detainees at Guantanamo Bay to visit them, an unprecedented step to ease the isolation of inmates who in some cases have been held at the U.S. facility for close to a decade, according to congressional aides."

"The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which monitors conditions at the military prison in Cuba and facilitates videoconferences between detainees and their families, has been in serious discussions with the Pentagon about a visitation program, the aides said."

This idea isn’t as radical as when someone proposed Gitmo detainees be allowed conjugal visits from Code Pink, but it certainly has its potential security hazards.

Rep. Peter King wrote a letter to SecDef Gates and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs asking for an explanation.

Another question, provided the WaPo’s report is accurate, is simply where these family members would be kept. After all, there isn’t a Motel 6 down the road from Gitmo:

"Because Guantanamo is off-shore, families would not necessarily need to enter the mainland United States to reach the prison, and the visits could be staged from a neighboring country willing to allow the families to move into and out of the base."

Good luck finding a country willing to do that. If one is found, it wouldn’t happen without a “little somethin’ for your trouble” expense on the part of the US. On the flip side, be wary of any country way too agreeable. It’s a bad idea all the way around.

And I suppose we will have to pay for their travel and the construction of luxurious accommodations -- Club Med Gitmo -- for their visits. What about the Americans who will never again be able to visit their loved ones because THEY ARE DEAD?

In a sane world, we would follow the families back to their holes, and see what we could find.

Jeez Louise!

Just when I think that Present Stroker’s Romper Room Regime can’t get any more STUPID, they just have to prove me wrong!

The sooner that we get these assholes OUT of OUR White House, the better!

In a world where we didn’t care what the Muslim world thought, they would be tried by military tribunal and executed.

Stupid? I think it is on purpose, as far as the administration is concerned. And shame on the Pentagon for even considering this. Our people are dead, and they are worrying about visiting rights for terrorists. Screw those international agencies.

Why not offer them conjugal weekends with their favorite camel?

Nope. We will set them up in oceanfront Condos in Miami, so that the commute won’t be so taxing on them. They will be able to bring their extended famiies, and then we will support them with welfare, medical care and pay for their kids education. We will probably build a special place for them to have conjugal visits, all wives will breed like cockaroaches and all children will be born here on our dime, have American citizenship and can grow up to be President!!!!!

as far as I’m concerned, they can all have conjugal visits - WITH THEMSELVES!

Let me guess: Conjugal visits, pig roasts, keggers, Scrabble & Twister, 42’ 3-D big screens in every room, air conditioning, lobster night, weekend passes to Havana, Bingo....

My understanding is that much of this is driven by intel gathering. Apparently there are a large group of detainees that have access to internet communications that don't realize that everything is monitored. The low level detainees aren't that smart but have yielded a good bit of intel when they communicate with buddies back home.

I wonder if Bergdahl’s parents will be afforded a visit to their son....
