ROLLA, Mo. A gunman tried to break into a Missouri Army base Thursday and fired on police who pursued him before crashing a vehicle at a nearby university, which went on lockdown after he was seen entering a campus building, officials said.
The Missouri University of Science and Technology campus remained locked down at midday as the search continued for the man, who fired shots near campus but apparently not on school grounds, a school spokeswoman said.

Amish, right?
(((PING)))
They caught him.
Subject, Cody Wilcoxen, in custody near Edgar Springs without incedent... nothing to see here...move along
Sounds like another crazy liberal.
Wait at minute, it's now Palin's fault.
The Army has bases now. A consequence of the repealing DADT? You make the call.
What. . .you mean he didn’t toss the gun before going on campus? After all, it is a “gun free zone.”
Ohhhh. . .I caught that jab at the Air Force. . .clever.
For those that don’t know, the Army has Posts, the Air Force has Bases.
Would ping but the suspect has been apprehended.
I guess 32 miles is 'nearby'.
I just talked to one of the MPs at the gate he ran.
Sandy hair, 5’10, kaiki shorts and striped shirt, he drove up for entry, did not have proper ID and was told to pull through and turn around, which is standard for this Fort.
Instead of turning around, he drove on into the Fort without stopping. The main gate is about 8 kiosks and very wide and does not have a pop-up barrier system of the new caliber. He drove through the Fort north area and (I assume) out the east gate winding through the woods, which is the back road to Rolla the college town 20 minutes away.
There are some reports that he fired his rifle during that part of the pursuit.
He was seen entering a building on campus with the rifle and the campus, with students now out for the year, went into lockdown. The local hospitals, schools etcetera also went into lockdown.
Fort Leonard Wood, which is one of the major bases for MP training and CID training has been in the process of having SWAT joint training with the MO State Highway Patrol this week. On the fort when this occured were 300 mid level and higher field officers with the State Troopers and all the SWAT teams — talk about hitting a hornets nest.
Helicopters, the whole nine yards. This guy is lucky to be taken alive because heavy security drills due to OBL were held this week on post as well.
Trying a forced entry to a MP traing Fort the week of OBL and then running to a university campus is hardly the way to gain friends.
I am familiar with this neck of the woods. I have been on post many times and one of my children is a graduate of what use to be UMR. Obviously the AP person writing up the story has no clue the terrain and what it means to drive either the back roads or I-44 to get to Rolla. And Rolla is basically UMR or whatever it is they are calling it these days.
And I would totally agree this turkey is very lucky to still be breathing. No way he was up to any good.
see my 13
Actually he was caught on the Missouri S&T campus after running thru McNutt Hall from what I’m seeing.
I was wrong about which gate. came in west side and out the main gate according to this:
(CBS/KMOV) ROLLA, Mo. - Cody Wilcoxson, the man accused of trying to get onto a military base, firing shots at police and then carrying a weapon onto the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus, was apprehended Thursday afternoon.
Officials say Wilcoxson’s crime spree began around 8:30 a.m. Thursday when he tried to get onto Fort Leonard Wood, located about 130 miles from St. Louis. Officials say he wasn’t allowed onto the base, because he didn’t have proper identification. He was ordered to leave Fort Leonard Wood but instead continued driving through the west gate toward the main gate. Officials say military police followed him and he exited Fort Leonard Wood after less than five minutes on base.
Military police contacted St. Robert police and they took over the pursuit and followed Wilcoxson onto Interstate 44. St. Robert Chief Curtis Curenton tells CBS affiliate KMOV that the suspect fired at least a dozen rounds at police from an AK-47. Chief Curenton says his vehicle was hit twice. No one was injured.
Police say Wilcoxson later fired shots near the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus and was seen carrying a gun on campus.
According to a spokesperson for the university, an alert was sent out around 8:45 a.m. on Thursday. At 9:10 a.m., university officials reported that the suspect had left campus.
No shots were fired on campus and no injuries were reported. School is not in session.
Authorities found the Dodge Magnum Wilcoxson was reportedly seen driving near the campus and found blood inside the vehicle.
Willcoxson was released from jail in 2008 after serving a seven year sentence for second-degree burglary, escape from a county jail and assisting escape of a prisoner.
I stand corrected - dang there’s a lot of conflicting info out there:
http://www.ksdk.com/news/article/258620/3/Missouri-ST-gunman-suspect-captured
Rolla Police Chief Mark Kearse identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cody N. Willcoxson. Willcoxson lives in Missouri's South West City, near the Oklahoma border. He was released from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections in 2008 after serving about 3 1/2 years for burglary, escaping from jail, and other felonies.Investigators have applied for warrants for four counts of felony assault on law enforcement. Bond has been set at $1 million.
I suspect that this fellow is going away for a good long time.
I think he may not be solid citizen material, just kinda based upon what I read and how his day went.
