Title IX and Political Correctness are Killing Men's College Sports
Coach is Right ^ | 5/12/2011 | Kevin "Coach" Collins

In the early 1970’s the Congress passed Title IX an amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which was supposed to eliminate discrimination against women at colleges and universities receiving federal money. Who could be against such a law?

Nevertheless, as so many other efforts to help specific groups, Title IX’s “help” has morphed into a grotesque perversion of its intended purpose. The law of unintended consequences has joined forces with extreme political correctness to produce a monster which is devouring men’s sports teams at colleges across the country.

"PC" or "political correctness" is ruining a lot more situations, entities, and businesses than "men's college sports".

How about items like.....normal speech, social discourse, normal writing, publishing, candor, and judgement (just to name a few).

That is the problem with colleges and universities that draw money from the Federal Government. Eventually you become so beholden to them that they DICTATE what you can and cannot do in your school programs ( including what you can and cannot teach ).

In this sense, Grove City College and Hillsdale College are UNIQUE in that they REFUSE any government aid or grants whatsoever.

Regarding TITLE IX, Under President Dr. Charles S. MacKenzie, Grove City College was the plaintiff-appellee in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case in 1984, Grove City College v. Bell.

The ruling came seven years after the school’s refusal to sign a Title IX compliance form, which would have subjected the entire school to federal regulations, even future ones not yet issued. The court ruled 6-3 that acceptance by students of federal educational grants did fall under the regulatory requirements of Title IX, but limited the application to the school’s financial aid department.

In 1988, new legislation subjected every department of any educational institution that received federal funding to Title IX requirements.

In response, Grove City College withdrew from the Stafford loan program entirely beginning with the 1988-89 academic year, and established its own loan program with PNC Bank.

The move earned the respect and admiration of many influential academics, including David Warren, the president of the National Association of Colleges and Universities. Warren said in a 1996 interview that Grove City has a “history of making bold and principled decisions. And a lot of colleges sympathize with what they’ve done.”

Currently, Grove City is one of a handful of colleges (along with Hillsdale College, which did likewise after the aforementioned 1984 case) does not allow its students to accept federal financial aid of any kind, including grants, loans, and scholarships.

BTW, Grove City College has a thriving sports program FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, and a visit to their campus shows that almost everyone is into some form of sports.

This month, Grove City College has been named the top value private liberal arts schools throughout the nation by Consumers Digest Magazine’s Top 100 College Values. More than 2,000 colleges and universities that offered four-year degrees were considered for the rankings.

The rankings were derived from a formula that blended the academic excellence of first-time freshmen at a school, evaluated through standardized test scores, high-school rank and grade point average as well as the institution’s educational quality, assessed by four- and six-year graduation rate, student-retention rate and percentage of faculty holding a doctorate degree. LESSON: YOU DON’T NEED GOVERNMENT MONE TO THRIVE. If you DO accept government money, be prepared to accept their rules and regulations.

If you embrace government money, you have to live with the consequences, be it schools, organizations or even charities.

The solution to this problem is simple: do away with college sports. You’re there to get an education. Let the NFL and NBA run their own minor leagues.

Sarah Palin is a Title 9 supporter. That is the ONLY wart I can see that she has.

When are we going to get the courage to stand up against political correctness? How long are we going to accept “unintended consequences” as an excuse? If the Democrats are smart enough to control Washington, coordinate massive voter fraud, organize and utilize labor unions, vastly expand government control, certainly they are not dumb enough to always be blindsided by unintended consequences.

The error, here, in my opinion, is in referring to the law of "unintended consequences." As usual, what are referred to as "unintended consequences," by those who seek to give Leftist interference with normal human behavior the benefit of the doubt, are actually the totally predictable results of half-baked policy, served up by the "intellectually underdone," to quote a great Senator of a century past.

Where understanding must start is by a recognition that men and women are different--something totally clear to any normal person;--indeed, the basis for the very continuity of human life, the basis to many, for the pursuit of happiness, etc..

For men, athletic performance can be a form of mating related strut; an instinctive way to demonstrate an edge over potential rivals in the ultimate pursuit. For the girls, wholesome play may more likely be the end in itself. This is neither good nor bad. It is reality. Why should anyone seek to outlaw it?

When did Conservatives begin to think that government money was a necessity to do anything worth doing?

OMG! Less government money for men's sports teams! Cry me a river.

If any collegiate athlete is serious - they will form a club and finance it themselves - as was done with the sport I participated in - Crew.

It is disgusting that the highest paid State official in many a State is a football coach! Yeah - nevermind all that science stuff - or good governance - nah our #1 priority is WINNING FOOTBALL GAMES!!!!

I was on the first cross-country team and track teams at Madison College in 1971. A friend was on the first wrestling team. Sadly they are both gone now, however JMU does have a womens cross country team now!

Sports shouldn’t qualify you for college. They should be either done on your time, for the sake of being interested in it.

However, if a professional sports team wants to pay your way through because you are good enough to play on their farm teams, I don’t have a problem with that.

No, but that is what is said about other solid conservatives, like West or Cane or Christie.

They are solid conservatives, except for their own individual blotches and some people here scream they they have no right to run to be the presidential nominee.

The answer is TRUE gender equity. No all-boy or all-girl teams. Just like the private sector is suppose to be, everyone competes for the same job based on ability.

What? That would end all girls sports...well you wanted equity.

They won’t. Colleges make waaaaaaaaay too much money out of their big sports teams. They aren’tt paying the kids. giving a few a free ride scholarship is nothing compared to what they rake in.
