SWAT team fired 71 shots in raid

The Pima County Regional SWAT team fired 71 shots in seven seconds at a Tucson man they say pointed a gun at officers serving a search warrant at his home. Jose Guerena, 26, a former Marine who served in Iraq twice, was holding an AR-15 rifle when he was killed, but he never fired a shot, the Sheriff's Department said Monday after initially saying he had fired on officers during last week's raid.

I find it impossible to believe that a SWAT team ( unless they had a no-knock warrant, or for other reasons which would have been clearly spelled out in advance during the briefing did not loudly announce themselves. And any person who then answers his door holding a weapon is an idiot.

According the account in the article, he didn't answer the door. They broke it down.

I am very pro LEO.

But I hate the militarization of the local police. And I hate the politicalization of the local police departments like the one in Tucson (they have an idiot for Chief).

I am not making a judgment against the police here. But from what was presented thus far, it looks like a terrible mistake that cost a citizen his life. If it as presented thus far, the police department is in deep trouble.

“Here in the Tampa Bay area, we have had SEVEN police officers killed in the last few months, either while serving warrants, or during what they thought to be fairly innocuous traffic stops.”

I think that you'll see more of this, especially traffic stops. People are getting really PO’d about being targeted for “revenue enhancement” by being hit with a $500-$1000 ticket. That plus ordinary people are seeing the cops as not your friend but your enemy.

We are living in a police state whether people want to admit it or not. Just look at what is happening, SWAT teams can break into your home, shoot you and let you bleed out for a few hours (don't even have to have a gun, out here some granny was filled full of holes in bed for making a “sudden move”, no cop went to jail), they can seize your property without any justification and then you have to PROVE that it wasn't from illegal activity in order to get it back (oh and the cops get to keep the money that they seize, nice incentive for taking stuff from people), they can take your kids away from you based on an anonymous tip and again you have to prove that you weren't doing anything bad. The list goes on and on. Our freedoms have vanished thanks to the nanny state mentality that the voters think will keep them safe. Pathetic.

I used to be very pro law enforcement. Then I had reason to call the police. The pathetic response made me realize they really do not care.

The LEOs who post on FR will go to any length to excuse criminal behavior of a fellow LEO. Its beyond disgusting.

I went to high school with our local constable. He is a long time family friend. He is good with the local kids and knows when to back away from unnecessary nonsense.

But they have him wearing a black uniform, sporting an automatic pistol and looking the part. If I get in trouble and need him, he will be there. I would not have his job, he puts up with a lot of crap.

But SWAT teams give me the creeps. Many who want to be a part of that, don’t belong in law enforcement. (and certainly not the military)

“We can’t have ROE here like we do with our military.”

That is part of the problem they think they are the military. They are civilians and should act that way. No knock and SWAT should be outlawed except in extreme circumstances. Please don’t tell me how dangerous the job is the statistics don’t show that.

“I used to be very pro law enforcement. Then I had reason to call the police. The pathetic response made me realize they really do not care.”

I’ve had the same kind of experiences, had my car stolen and they didn’t even bother to come out just took the info over the phone and that was it. Had my apartment broken into and same thing. Property crimes don’t matter to these guys. But boy, have the ex-wife call in a false DV and your butt will be in jail so fast it will make your head spin. Then the system kicks in full tilt and they do everything in their power (lie, provide false statements, etc.) to get you to plead out. Doesn’t matter that your innocent or guilty just that they need to get a conviction at that point. And don’t even get me started on “family court” and TRO’s!

Sheriff’s dept in my County is stellar. The various PD’s are useless revenue generators.

Government has turned the WOD into a lucrative industry, which enables them to hire tens of thousands more government employees, expanding the courts, probation departments, prisons, etc, etc... It's also given government more control, and enabled government to slowly evolved civilian police departments into paramilitary organizations to be used against the people.

We're supposed to be Americans, not the enemy of the police. People have always had drug and alcohol problems and should be given help if they ask for it and need it. Instead of police raids and throwing hundreds of thousands of Americans into cages for substance abuse and seizing their assets.

Furthermore, the WOD is a *huge* factor in creating thousands of violent organized gangs, who themselves have made a violent and very lucrative living off selling the drugs which were made illegal.

The WOD is a lose lose for ALL, expect government and organized gangs.

LE, in general, has become an industry, and you would be naive to the extreme if you fail to understand that an opportunity to generate "revenue" trumps any loyalty

Yeah, that's why I posted the above.

My advise? Do not call the police for anything else your being attacked by hordes of AIDs infected cannibals. Even then you could be arrested for hate crimes against the cannibal community.

And the government will always serve itself first.

You bet. Government didn't become an all controlling obese monster by looking out for the best interests of Americans.

Each and every one of us, no matter how bad ass you think you are, no matter how law-abiding you have been, no matter what, can be gunned down by the jackbooted militarized police forces in this country ... because they got the wrong house, because an ex-employee with an axe to grind told the police a lie, an ex-spouse wants to get full custody of the kids, because an ex-roommate used to deal some weed ...

Or even for no reason at all other than they have the power to do it. And get away with it.

Upon executing the warrant, if you open the door and see a subject of the warrant pointing a high-powered semi-automatic rifle at you, you may then choose to fire or be shot.

Open the door? According to the article, 5 paramilitary police troops broke down the door and stormed what they clearly perceived to be the enemy.

One question... Do citizens of the United States have inalienable rights or not?

Citizenz [us] have not had inalienable rights in many years. As Janet Reno so elonquently said when she was attorney General,"We give our citizens more rights than any other Country".

Nowadays a cop wants to kill you he does. And he gets away with it. How? Officer safety. "I feared for my life".

That was not always the case, but, this is now, and that was then.

I suppose there could have been a worse operation by the cops.

What if he were wandering harmlessly out the front door of COSTCO with his wife and the rest of the store crowd...?

Your post was way more articualte than my post #101...
but I agree with you..the WOD is out of control, ineffective for getting results and just a bunch of legal gangs chasing after other gangs.

Its moving towards what Oboz wants: a miltarized police force...welcome the Bronwshirts! That is how Hitler did it...they were thugs too.
First comes saturday, then comes sunday....
