I see a lot of houses of cards in that pic.
People should remember that many of these buildings are not built due to demand, but due to gov’t directive.
Maybe, but if it is, its a house of cards made of steel girders and reinforced concrete ;)
And lots of it at that. Chinese cement consumption last year was about 1.8+ billion tons. The other 190 or so countries in the rest of the world combined consumed about 1.6+ billion tons of cement.
And this is one picture of one city. There are scores of cities across China that have this contrast (though probably not this stark). And scores more in the future.
China has at least another 20-25 of massive construction left. And most of those years, will be consuming over 2+ billion tons/yr. As massive as Shanghai is today, in the future, while it continues to expand, will only represent 3% of all the infrastructure in China.
