National Emergency Alert System Set To Launch In NYC ( Drudge)

---snip-----

NEW YORK, (CBSNewYork) – A new national alert system is set to begin in New York City that will alert the public to emergencies via cell phones.

It’s called the Personal Localized Alert Network or PLAN. Presidential and local emergency messages as well as Amber Alerts would appear on cell phones equipped with special chips and software.

The Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the system would also warn about terrorist attacks and natural disasters.

“The lessons that were reinforced on 9/11 is the importance of getting clear and accurate information to the public during a crisis,” New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference on Tuesday.

I have no problem with this on the surface. Everyone should have emergency info available to them for obvious reasons ....

Caveat :

When this rolls out nationally, how will the alerts know HOW TO LOCATE YOU WHEN YOU ARE NOT HOME?

Say you're on vacation in L.A. from Tulsa .... is your phone going to light up about an out of control brush fire in Hollywood or warn you of a potential tornado ripping through Oklahoma?

IF THE SYSTEM CAN FIND YOU ON ANY GIVEN DAY ......

Does that not skeeve you just a bit?

I don’t know that I want my kids getting the alerts. Also, it will probably tie up the regular system where I wouldn’t be able to get to my own kids.

I think you should be able to opt out of the alert system.

Cell phones track you anyway, no way to prevent that.

Vote for me! That’s what is a little scary.

The day it becomes mandatory, my cell phone plan will be cancelled....Life was much simpler before cell phones, and it will be much simpler after them. I refuse to allow the government to send propaganda to me on a device that I pay for...red

Safe assumption it will deliver a region-specific message to any phone in that region by the fact that the phone is in that region. Cell phone towers have a range of about 2 miles; safe to assume “any phone in range of tower X will be notified of local emergency Y.” Your phone number doesn’t matter in that case.

Oh, cell phones do indeed track you.

IT is trivial to geolacte someone with a cell phone, your location is triangulated by cell tower reception,

will the system use geo location to filter the message recipients? Depends on network traffic,

Argument to be made that people travelling would want to know about emergencies in their hometown just as much when away as when present in home town.

I am wondering if NYC is using eVigilo’s cellular emergency alert system that is used in Israel? That system is incredibly effective according to Israeli Civil Defense press releases.

geolacte = geolocate

Also, in Chile after the last big earthquake the country embarked on a similar emergency alert system using eVigilo, earthquake/tsunami/emergency alert system.

After the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, several countries were also supposed to use an emergency system over cell networks, I’m not sure how many were implemented.

If they can mandate healthcare. They can mandate cell phones. It’s for “the General Welfare”.
