Cher spent months avoiding her transgender son Chaz Bono as he went through the process to become a man. She says she was terrified she wouldn't recognize him as her child.
Bono was born Chastity - Cher and ex-husband Sonny Bono's only daughter - and she broke her mother's heart when she came out as a lesbian. Chaz feared more heartbreak was to come when he revealed his plans to undergo a lengthy and extensive sex change procedure, but Cher took the news well.
However, once the process started, the pop superstar kept her distance.
In new documentary Becoming Chaz, which debuted on Oprah Winfrey's new OWN network, Cher says, "I was so nervous. I hadn't seen her... and I was putting it off.
"My boyfriend finally said, 'This is crazy, just do it.' I said, 'I'm so terrified of what will happen. If I don't recognize her, what will happen?"
Cher admits there are many changes she's slowly having to come to terms with: "At some point, I'm gonna have to start calling her 'him'... It doesn't seem comfortable to me yet. Actually I just can't remember... and I guess I'll start forcing myself... (but) I'm not sure she cares."
She reveals she asked her transgender son if she could have a copy of his old voicemail message - because it was her daughter speaking.
She adds, "I was hysterical one day because I was calling Chaz's answering machine and I realized it was her old voice, and then I said, 'Chaz is there a way I can save it because I will never hear that voice again?' And there wasn't, it was gone.
"That's the most traumatic thing that has happened to me in this whole thing - hearing her voice and knowing I'll never hear it again."
Why? She is just reaping what she sowed. She wanted a career...she got it. She wanted money....she got it. She wanted to be famous...she got it. She wanted to be sensational....she was. Now that she is getting old she is weighing what is important in life....too late, Cher, too late.
“I just heard Chaz on the radio yesterday - she/he said she/he had a girlfriend.”
Yes, well it’s a bit of a “she/he said” “she/he said” situation, so who knows what to believe? :-)

The doctors and those involved have made decisions based on a thorough knowledge and evaluation of all the facts. Their judgments, conclusions, and actions have been carefully considered.
Those who sneer at them merely show a willingness to jump to conclusions based on ignorance and, at best, very few facts and only the most superficial understanding. This reveals some things about them and their judgment.
Furthermore, to sneer and scorn those who have very serious problems and are doing their best to deal with them is ugly and unworthy of decent people. If we are to be truthful, benevolent, decent, and good people, we must rise above such impulses.
I think FReepers are sneering at the notion that one can become a man via a simple operation and that after the fact you should embrace said mutilation by referring to “her” as “him.”

She/ he was on local radio the other day and said that she has not had the Addadictomy. She said that the technology was not very good yet. So it is a man with a vagina.
And they concluded that they could turn this female into a male by surgery. They shouldn't even be in the medical profession any more than abortionists should be.

Her mom has quite a large following of homosexual men in her fan base. Perhaps Chastity is subconsciously trying to get her mom's approval.
Chastity only had her breasts removed - she will not be adding a penis - probably because she doesn’t want to look phoney...(where is that needle so I can pluck out my mind’s eye.).

Can't do--it's the "Look at me" profession. Innate wthin this career choice is the assumption that everybody ought to be looking at you and paying attention to you, that attention to you is your natural due--along with the knowledge that once they stop paying attention to you, you got to get a real job.
It's a desperate, freaky, tragic career choice which becomes more desperate, freaky and tragic the more successful you are at it--like in politics! In both fields, the coin of the realm, and the key to your survival in it is something transient and subjective in nature: approval of others. It's extremely had to measure, difficult to be sure of, and next to impossible to predict--and it is the foundation of your professional (and often personal) life. Any wonder that people who base their careers on this unstable and statistically hypothetical foudation often tend to be unstable themselves, and flailing about for anything that seems stable or likely to give them some happiness (based, of course, upon the expectations of someone who gets into that line of work)?
Yeah, me too. It would be somewhat like a death. That would sort of explain why she wanted to save the voice recording, wouldn't it ? I mean, it was the last thing you'd have of that person you once knew.
Been here a long time, TS. There's nothing more conservative than the freedom to do and say whatever you want and truth for its own sake. If that's not your passion, maybe you're in the wrong place.
