Tata starts exporting world's cheapest car

NEW DELHI (MarketWatch) -- Tata Motors Ltd. TTM -0.42% has started exporting the Nano minicar from April, a move that will likely help India's largest auto maker by sales further lift sales of the world's cheapest car and reduce its sole dependence on the home market.

The Mumbai-based company, which controls the Jaguar and Land Rover luxury car brands, exported 498 units of the Nano in the past month, according to data issued Monday by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the local automotive industry lobby group.

The company has said also that it could start selling the Pixel, a new city car concept for Europe based on the Nano, in two to three years. The Pixel could be fitted either with a 1.2-liter, turbo-charged diesel engine, or an electric one similar to that used in its Indica Vista EV hatchback.

Note the engine/motor choices for the Pixel. No gasoline-powered choice which we're pretty much stuck with here due to environmentalist activism.

I’m sorry but it is an ugly car. It looks similar to the little, red car that my kids “drove” around in when they were toddlers. Actually, I think my kid’s car was bigger and it had a sporty, yellow roof.

With wheels that small one good sized pot hole is going to remove your entire suspension. Of course that all depends on how fast you are going, and considering that it red-lines at 60mph the answer is probably not very fast.

Also it only gets 66 mpg highway, and you can't drive it on one because it can't go fast enough. So you are stuck with 55mpg on side streets. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Diesel will get you 45 highway with a lot more car around you. And nobody is going to laugh at you for driving a clown car.
