Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales chided fellow Republicans on immigration, urging them to work toward comprehensive immigration reform.
Gonzales, the first Hispanic attorney general of the U.S., said it was a "failure" by both parties to have not achieved immigration reform yet, and warned against a proposal favored by some Republicans to amend the U.S. Constitution to deny birthright citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants.
"My recommendation not just to the Republican Party but also the Democratic Party is that this country, our federal leaders need to pass comprehensive immigration reform," Gonzales said Sunday on Univision's "Al Punto" program. "Their failure, and it is a failure, has led to state governments taking action by passing state laws and we are going to have a patchwork network, of state laws governing immigration."
President George W. Bush sought a comprehensive immigration reform bill during his time in office, when Gonzales was attorney general, that would have given illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship. But conservatives in Congress balked at the proposal, which the administration was forced to eventually withdraw.
Gonzales said it was especially important to provide a federal solution to immigration, in part because of the disparate laws emerging on the state level.

A “Conservative” named “Alberto Gonzales” holds a view like this? Shocking, I tell you!
This is the real crux none of these people will answer. Instead they'll attack us with guilt trips about being a "nation of immigrants" the flowery lines about "the American dream" and pretend we don't HAVE an legal immigration system. We do. People avail themselves of it every year. Great people. New Americans from all walks of life.
Not long ago we had the president of Mexico attacking our legal immigration system while he enforces one far more draconian than anything on our books. What kind of national leader wants to export millions of his own people? It seems like insanity.
How can our officials not see their foolishness. When vast swaths of your nation is overrun by lawless invaders with alien values, languages and cultures, how do you decide rewarding them for doing so is the way to go?
Who does this? Suicidal nations, that's who.
There are excellent reasons immigration is closely regulated the world over. Without such safeguards a nation loses its unique character and eventually its self.
The risk here as every bit as high for "Hispanic Americans" as it is for any group. It actually maybe even higher since their uniquely American subcultures will be co-opted and drowned out first by aliens from the Old Country.
Those pushing amnesty hate America. They hate the melting pot. They hate our unique ways. They are racists motivated by a desire to create millions of future voters for their party.
They're happy to create a permanent underclass of aliens. They don't care about those people, only the power, only the votes.
Each one of them is insulated from fallout by their own wealth and power position. I have lived in a majority-minority area for dozens of years. This is not about racism or xenophobia.
It's about losing the character and uniqueness of America to aliens who cared nothing for its sovereignty, nothing for its lawful immigration system, care nothing about becoming Americans by shared values, language and culture.
They are not immigrants. Immigrants use the front door. They are aliens.
Soon this won't just be a "clever" ad for an ethnic station. It'll be reality:

Ringos ...a part of the economic woes we have today is thanks to the Bushes One World government idea
Americans not working and thus not paying taxes..
The New World Order.. Americans living in cardboard boxes
Another motive might be that he wants to appear more "conservative" to those who don't think deeply about the matter. Unfortunately, he keeps getting reelected.
Most certainly, maybe the same idiots who believe a president Trump would just get on the phone and command OPEC and China to move their prices up and down just to suit us.
This is a reason why judging politicians based on ‘assumed motives’ is problematic. Clearly this Grahamnesty constitutional amendment statement was designed to go-no-place, but some suckers might assume that Graham is suddenly an immigration control hawk at heart based on that statement of his. The question they should ask is : "why is he proposing something that is clearly impossible when his history is the opposite positions?"
I continue to be amazed by the political stupidity that drug money will buy.
