San Francisco, one of the first sanctuary cities in the nation, plans to end its cooperation with federal immigration officials and start releasing illegal immigrants arrested for minor offenses before they can be picked up for deportation.
The city's decision is the latest development in a tug of war between several communities and the federal government over its controversial national program that automatically checks the immigration status of arrestees.
Officials in jurisdictions including Providence, R.I., and Chicago have also challenged the program, which they say undermines trust that it has taken local law enforcement years to build in immigrant communities.
California and Illinois lawmakers are considering measures to let communities retreat from the so-called "Secure Communities" program, which links up the FBI's criminal database and the Department of Homeland Security's records so that every time someone is arrested their immigration status is automatically, electronically checked.
Washington state has deferred to local governments on whether they want to join program overseen by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Never you mind that “equal protection under the law” nonsense. If you’re a citizen, you will be held fully accountable for minor offenses. If you’re here illegally, you get a pass.

Why are there any conservatives still living in CA?
Widow Wants San Francisco Sanctuary Law Changed After Illegal Charged With Murder
Monday, July 21, 2008
A San Francisco woman whose husband and two sons were gunned down last month allegedly by an illegal immigrant who remained in the city despite previous crimes is demanding the city do something about its sanctuary law.
Danielle Bologna was widowed on June 22 when Edwin Ramos, 21, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, allegedly gunned down her husband, Anthony, and two sons, Matthew and Michael, in a road rage incident when her family was returning from a picnic.
Ramos has been charged with three counts of murder in the case, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
“It was a senseless crime, and had they done something this animal would not have taken my family,” Bologna told FOX News on Monday. “I feel that the government should have stepped in. I feel that they allow these immigrants to come in and how dare they strip our families like this.”
The Chronicle reported that Ramos was convicted of two gang-related felonies while a juvenile and remained in San Francisco because the Juvenile Probation Department did not alert federal authorities. San Francisco’s 1989 “City of Refuge” ordinance prohibits city agencies from contacting the feds on immigration matters.
The newspaper also found that federal officials knew about Ramos’ immigration status in March when he was arrested on a gun charge, though they couldn’t tell the Chronicle why they didn’t put an immigration hold on Ramos.
Bologna blames the city.
“It should have been resolved at the beginning, when this guy had done more than one crime in the city,” she told FOX News. “I want justice. I want the people to see: If my family wasnt safe, what makes you think yours will be?”
I guess this means that San Franfreeco will be flooded with illegals now? Don’t sound bad to me.
It doesn't matter because the feds just release the illegals that are turned over to them.
And if you deport them they just walk back across the border anyway.
The whole illegal immigration system is dysfunctional. The only solution would be to hire a private company to enforce immigration laws and border security.
Thanks for posting. These incidents are very sad and it looks like it could have been avoided.
I don’t know about this case but by 2013 the Secure Communities program is required across the country.
It seems if this type thing happens after that time the city or state would be wide open to a civil lawsuit.
Sadly you’re right in many many cases.
Obama and Napolitano are hell bent on amesty and an open border. We have to get an anti-illegal alien president in 2012 and this program will be effective.
Yes, so sad, sniff sniff whimper whimper
What in God's name are you talking about?
Jerry Bologna and his two suns were massacred in broad daylight by a vicious ANIMAL who had been coddled by the whiny slime in San Francisco. They even made excuses for him by saying it was "mistaken identity" - as if it would have been OK for him to have a little machine gun battle on the streets as long as it was with other gang bangers.
And Mrs. Bologna did sue the county of SF, and she had her suit thrown out.
And now the garbage scum of that city are doing the demands of the Raza racists who work frantically to defeat any law enforcement of any kind when it comes to people with spanish surnames.
It's not sad, it's a damn outrage and it should make people's blood boil.
Sorry if you’re offended at my wording. I didn’t take time to look up the history of the case but then you filled me in.
“Federal funds should be cut off to sanctuary cities.”
AMEN.
Then, arrest the responsible bastard city councils, mayors, what the hell, and toss them in jail for violation of FEDERAL LAW.
If the feds did that they’d probably only have to do it once, it would get the attention of the other sanctuary cities real quick.
bump
That's why the AZ law allows suits against governments not following the law.
Well, conservatives like great weather too. There are still some us left in San Diego, but it increasing feels like we are in occupied territory.
CA should be divided up into several states, with LA and SF being converted to city-states, like Washington, DC. Ideally, with no representation in the Senate, just a couple of congressmen.
