A 7-year-old boy is hospitalized after being attacked by a leopard at the Sedgwick County Zoo.
Dispatchers said the call came in just before 1:30.
Zoo officials said the boy climbed a guardrail to get closer to the leopard cage. The leopard was able to reach the child with both of its paws, injuring the boy on his neck. The boy suffered wounds on his neck and face.
The zoo official said people riding the zoo tram saw the attack, jumped off and scared the leopard away.
Via Christi on St. Francis reports that the child is now in fair condition.
Zoo officials do have the animal under control.
All zoo visitors have been asked to move to the front entrance as authorities investigate the incident. KAKE'S Deb Farris said the zoo remains open.
According to a USD 259 spokesperson, the student was from Linwood Elementary School.
How many years ago? I didn’t realize that tourists get picked off so often.
My take on this is that he was on a school trip. Probably a teacher and 3-4 parents and 20-30 7 YO children.
How dare you post a pic like that without linking a story!
Not to be confused with the case of the unfortunate Miss Searles, Zinc Heiress:
I CAN HAS CHEEZBOI?
"Hold muh sippy cup..."
That is a beautiful cat. Also--and this is easy to forget in a zoo--very, very deadly. Most definitely not a lolcat.

I can tell you its an odd feeling to be at the zoo with your kid and have a leopard go into predator mode and focus on your child.
Then there was the time that I was a teenager and my car broke down in the middle of six flags Leopard country safari...
” Zoo officials said the boy climbed a guardrail to get closer to the leopard cage.”
Where were his parents and why didn’t they stop him fom doing something that abominably stupid?
Post of the day
Shoot, if your LOLcat was as big as this one I wouldn’t turn my back on him.
I have to admit, when we drive thru Lion Country Safari and the Rhinos get close to the car I am always reminded of Hatari....
This was over the course of about 5 years...
Talking about predator mode...an acquaintance had a huge male Husky that she observed stalking her two-year old niece whenever the baby visited. Thereafter, that Husky was relegated to a locked room whenever the niece visited.
Truth is, dogs kill more people in the U.S. every year than are ever killed by big cats, whether in the wild or in zoos.
Hence the expression about leopards not changing their spots.
He was on a trip from school. Boys do stupid stuff fast when they are little! I figure I saved the lives of my sons hundreds of times. LOL
Still, this kid should have been watched more closely.
Did you ever go to the zoo with your kids and see the upscale yuppie moms socializing into oblivion or chatting on the phone while their dumplings run wild, climbing on everything and banging on all the enclosures.
I have.
Did you ever think, “I wonder what would happen if one of those kids go too close to one of the big cats?”
I have.
No, you cannot has Cheezeboi.
