That being the case, absent any major revelation of tangible evidence, it's time to let it go. From here on out, this cause serves Obama and Obama alone.
I am inclined to agree with everything EXCEPT that it serves Obama's purpose. Anything which detracts from him and questions his legitimacy is very unlikely to work in his favor.
I now believe he is legitimate, but he has managed to get away with putting over a lie on the American People. Nowadays, people are apparently okay with that.
People that question his legitimacy already don't like him. It's just another vector to channel the dislike. It's not winning converts from people who love his policies, but are also die hard Constitutionalists. That Venn diagram would show precious little overlap.
No, all this does is build sympathy for his supporters, and convinces the middle that birthers (and their allies) deal in speculation and not in facts. It's hard to argue policy issues when your side has a reputation for being wide eyed conspiracy theorists.
The 9/11 truthers ran into this same issue, and were isolated and marginalized by serious Democratic politicians. Sure it 'detracted and hurt the legitimacy' of GW Bush, but it was counterproductive for the left, at best.
I now believe he is legitimate, but he has managed to get away with putting over a lie on the American People.
If you think he's legitimate, then what lie are you referring to?
(Aside from, obviously, everything he's ever said about anything.)
