Palin splits with neocon advisers
Politico ^ | 05/03/2011 | Ben Smith

Posted on 05/03/2011 8:24:13 AM PDT by Hawk720

Sarah Palin has parted ways with the neoconservative foreign policy advisers who had been writing speeches and advising her on policy since she joined the McCain campaign.

An aide to Palin, Tim Crawford, confirmed that Orion Strategies' Randy Scheunemann and Michael Goldfarb are no longer working for her PAC. They parted, both sides said on good terms.

"Randy flat out said, 'We can't give you the time,'" Crawford said.

(snip)

Crawford said they've been replaced by Peter Schweizer, a writer and fellow at the Hoover Institution who blogs regularly at Andrew Breitbart's Big Peace.

The personnel shift carries an ideological charge. Scheunemann, the former executive director of the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, is a longtime neoconservative stalwart, as is Goldfarb, a former reporter and protege of Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol. They crafted for Palin a policy platform and voice reflecting an eagerness to use American force. The pair, who helped Palin with press and debate prep in 2008, were also something of Palin's last link to Washington's political establishment.

But Palin parted ways with that aggressive internationalism in a speech yesterday, condemning U.S. involvement in Libya and laying out a more cautious philosophy of the use of force. Schweizer has articulated a more skeptical view of the use of American force and promotion of democracy abroad.

"Egypt does a lot of things wrong, but they have also been pro-American on a lot of levels," he wrote of Obama's support for protesters in Egypt -- which was being roundly criticized by neoconservatives for being insufficiently vigorous. "When protests broke out in Iran earlier during his tenure in the White House, Obama was not willing to openly back them, at least until he came under considerable fire. But now he is supporting them in Egypt?"

Whatever happened to that female banker(France?) who put all of her friends(and some say, Russian mafia) into Madoff’s scam?

CIRCA 2009 Investigators from three countries have joined forces in a bid to nail suspected accomplices of swindler Bernie Madoff trying to prove a Vienna fund manager was paid by Madoff to funnel billions of dollars in European investments to his Ponzi scheme.

Gerhard Jarosch, spokesman for the Vienna public prosecutor's office, confirmed his office is aiding the DOJ and Britain's Serious Fraud Office in separate investigations of Bank Medici AG and its chairwoman, Sonja Kohn. Both Kohn, 60, and Medici also have been the focus of a fraud investigation in Austria since Feb, Jarosch said, stressing that Kohn has not been charged with any criminal wrongdoing.

Her attorney, Andreas Theiss, insisted she had no personal dealings with Madoff. Vienna-based Bank Medici disclosed in December 2008 that it had suffered huge losses it blamed on Madoff.

"Palin is moving toward Ron Paul's position"

Captain Kirk and others always try to define it as the isolationists like Ron Paul against the NeoCons. They leave out the foreign policy Realists.

Her new adviser, Peter Schweizer, is a very well known foreign policy Realist. He is not a Ron Paul isolationist.

Schweizer's foreign policy positions are going to be similar to those such as Colin Powell, Bob Gates, Brent Scowcroft, Henry Kissinger, etc.

I know that many republicans and freepers are not willing to admit it, but Obama has followed the Realists' policies

“IMHO, neocons are libs who like to start wars for monetary reasons and then send your kids to go fight.”

Keeping USA out of foreign entanglements much much better. We have huge problems in this country; we can not afford the blood or money to fight and rebuild 5-10000 miles from home. Bush won a 2nd term barely but this war hobbled him severely. The most important war is for the Supreme Court. Libturds have done for mare damage to ths country from the court than even BinLaden accomplished.

I have contributed to sarah pac since July 2009. This was one area I hoped she would see is both a real-life and political loser: Fighting land wars thousands of miles from home on theoretical pretexts. To hunt down BinLaden, yes, and massive retaliation to to the Ta-lee-bahn, yes. All these other wars, if they are so important let the Eorpoeans/others lead. It’s much closer to their neighborhood.

“Hyperbole? Not at all.”

I think your credibility here went from ‘scant’ to ‘none’.

Now come on, this is Politico for Pete’s sake, they lie in between truths

Hell, they don't even do that. Politico is nothing more than the Huffington Post masquerading as an "official" news outlet. It was created to give a newsface and cover to the leftist blogs.

Ah, I think you misread what I said or absolutely didn’t understand the context. If the spirit moves you zero in on who I responded to. On the other hand, if you’re a Trumpbot, I understand your angst. It’s impossible for a curde and unprincipled man like Trump to rise to the caliber of Reagan.

Interesting points. Yes, false opposites are always a fun way to win an argument, but in the end they are unhelpful.

As for Obama, I don’t know if the realist school is his preference or if it has been imposed upon him by, well, reality. The latter would explain why it seems so haphazard. He lurches forward on one premise but must always finish on another, because reality intervenes. This thrashing about between utopian thinking and reality gives an impression of incompetence, precisely because the most competent plan is necessarily that which best accommodates itself to reality from the get-go.

Politico is the source of this.

it doesn't make sense to interpret their leaving as part of a plan

Yes, I noticed that too. However, being as far removed from the facts as we are, other inferences are possible. What if the reason they "don't have time" for her is A) because she was ramping up her demand for their time and they decided it was more than they could handle, or B) they just don't want to look like they've been fired, because that's bad for business. Until we hear Palin's side of the story, unfiltered, we won't really know.

[Odd, given that she was advocating ‘boots on the ground’ in Libya before US/NATO did anything.]

I’m hoping what she was saying was go in and do the job, or keep your nose out. a bit of nuance

Palin has flipped-flopped. The only candidates who were clear on opposing action against Libya are Bachmann, Gary Johnson, and Ron Paul. And the only conservative there is Bachmann.

You are right that there the realists also play a part in this debate. I was arguing that she was moving toward Paul's position on Libya. Having said that, I don't think you can say where she is going! It will shift depending on the mood of her potential electoral base in the GOP.

I know the Sarah worshippers disagree but I think this woman is very, very driven to appease her potential conservative base. At first, she bet (wrongly) that they were hawks on Libya and mirror images of the neocons in foreign policy. When she discovered that the conservative base was antiwar on Libya, she shifted opportunistically. She'd still be hawk today on Libya if conservatives had backed the Libya War.
