Fernandez says only legal hurdles halt Zelaya’s return to Honduras

RIO DE JANEIRO.- Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernandez said Friday that only some judicial hurdles prevent the return of ex president Manuel Zelaya to Honduras and that country’s reintegration to the (OAS).

"The only thing that’s halting that process, when the possibility is proposed for ex president Zelaya’s and other members of his cabinet’s return to Honduras, is that the Justice Ministry of that country warns of issuing arrest warrants," Fernandez said to Efe in Rio de Janeiro, where he participates in World Economic Forum for Latin America. “That doesn’t contribute anything to the adequate climate of coexistence between Hondurans."

Since January 2010 Zelaya is in self-exile in Dominican Republic, country which has mediated in Honduras’ return to the OAS, which suspended on July 4, 2009, after the coup.

Fernandez affirmed that Honduras president Porfirio Lobo, Zelaya, as well as several other countries of the region has the political will to normalize the situation, but the process now depends on a judicial decision, which must include all the legal rights for the ousted leader.

after the coup.

You mean after the attempted coup. Zelaya's coup was thwarted by Honduran Constitutional processes.

Each and every one of the gazillions of propagandistic enemedia crap on this topic needs to be corrected wherever possible.

There ought to be some major legal hurdles for a traitor to return to the scene of his crimes. Honduras should tell the OAS to pound sand too. They would be better off in the long run to reject any association with it or give it any legitimacy.

Honduras needed to finish this a long time ago. Zelaya should have met the same end as so many coup plotters who failed.

Zelaya stole 2 million USD from a bank. What is the criminal penalty for a 2 mil bank heist in Honduras?

I don't even know what the penalty would be here. But in Zelaya's case a good ass beating would be a fine start. ;^)

When all is said and done; a president who commits treason ought to be executed with no plea bargains considered IMO. That should be worth $2 million bucks even to a relatively poor country like Honduras.

Hold it fellows! I think this Zelaya chap would be thee perfect replacement for Joe Biden on the Obama '12 ticket. I heard The MMMMMB is looking for a new VEEP, and this Zelaya has "Latino Vote" written all over that ass you two are proposing to beat.

Just in case either of you two is hung up on Constitutionality, (that is, a legalistic nit-picking racist) I am having the authorities in Honolulu issue an ex post facto COLB for Mr. Zelaya, and then use that to generate a BC.

Also, Zelaya is probably available for SCOTUS, if the next seat hasn't already been promised to Bernardine Dohrn, or Hugo Chavez.
