Midland City Councilman Jeff Sparks said listing the lizard would affect more than jobs. "Midland secured water rights in Winkler County and has been working on a way to bring that water to Midland, we've been working on it for some time. If you list the lizard, not only will we not have jobs, we won't have water. Then the endangered species will be the people of West Texas."

This also affects higher education in the state:
Representatives with University Lands, which oversees the 2.1 million acres of land owned by the University of Texas System, said the listing would have an impact on higher education in Texas. Senior Geologist Doc Weathers said the listing could result in 1,000 oil and gas wells not being drilled and seven million barrels of oil equivalent in lost production annually.
