GOP leader says CA should adopt Texas' jobs model

Sacramento, Calif. (AP) -- Reflecting on lessons learned on a two-day trip to the Lone Star state, Assembly Republicans said Thursday California needs to follow Texas' model of lower taxes and fewer regulations and legal hurdles to keep the economy growing.

GOP lawmakers led a delegation of California representatives to meet with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, and spoke to business owners about why they left California last week.

Assembly Minority Leader Connie Conway of Tulare said the trip affirmed her caucus is on the right track with a package of bills she says would help California companies thrive. The Republican package of bills includes tax exemptions and credits for businesses and would repeal regulations they say are burdensome.

"I think in Texas we learned that Gov. Perry understands job creation is an important part of solving your state's budget problems," Conway said during a news conference held at a fast-food restaurant in Sacramento.

I run a small business in LA. For years my company has been registered with the city and has always been exempt from city taxes due to gross earnings not exceeding the small business limit. We received a noticed that we did not file in time. We were being fined and that interest would be levied. The city sent a Notice of Hearing, which is a four page printed document with all company information shown; that is, it was not just a form letter. I dutifully called the local city finance branch and got a recording that gave me another number to call since the local office would not take voice mail. I called the number given and received a similar message (after pressing 1), that due to the high volume in Notice of Hearings, that the voice mail was not accepting calls. The voice recommended that I open up the finance website and pay my taxes. What taxes? I dutifully followed the e-form link and entered all the magic boxes. After several pages, a printable form came back that showed how much I needed to cough up to my fair city. Based on the city employee time, web service, printed forms, etc. the city lost money on my company. I lost time in productive work. CAN’T THESE IDIOTS GET IT! Government does not create wealth. It consumes it.

In your dreams. Unfortunately CA has to sink a lot lower before advice like that starts making sense to the fools in Sacramento.
