Indiana votes to defund Planned Parenthood By: Sarah Kliff April 27, 2011 06:15 PM EDT

The Indiana State Legislature has voted to strip Planned Parenthood of its federal funding, putting the state on a path to barring the group from receiving public dollars.

The legislation now hits the desk of Gov. Mitch Daniels, putting the presidential contender who has famously called for a “truce” on social issues squarely in the middle of a contentious, national debate over Planned Parenthood’s federal funding.

Daniels now has one week to veto the bill or it becomes law without his signature.

The bill, which passed the Indiana State House late Wednesday afternoon, would bar the state from entering into contracts with abortion providers, making an exception for hospitals and ambulatory centers. Planned Parenthood of Indiana operates 28 clinics in Indiana, eight of which are Title X funded clinics. The group received about $3 million in federal funding last year. State officials have speculated that the bill, if passed, would lead to the state losing all $4 million in federal family planning dollars that it received last year.

Groups on both sides of the issue tell POLITICO they expect Daniels to sign the bill, despite his reluctance to engage in social issues.

“He’s always kept fiscal matters a top priority but proven consistently that he can and will deal with social issues like abortion at the same time,” Mike Fitcher, president of the Indiana Right to Life, previously told POLITICO. “We expect that this would be a bill he will personally see the value of and would see as a bill good for Indiana.”

He will sign the bill.

I wouldn't be so sure. When he was asked a couple of years ago if he would reinstate the Mexico City Policy, the executive order barring federal funding of any abortion-related medical care overseas, he said, "I don't know."

Glad to see SOME politicians on our side with the guts to fight against the evil that’s consuming our country and our culture.

The taxpayer funded mass murder of babies in the womb is an annoying "social issue"?

Beam me the f*** up.

Daniels is right that social issues are secondary to financial issues and the defeat of obami. After that, then take up the social issues.

If nothing else, couch it as a budgetary measure - why should the taxpayer have to pay for what is purely an elective medical procedure?

Daniels is a ninny, the financial is being spent on the social... every dime spent except for the military can be directly linked to 'social' issues.

Let me get this straight, the state gets 4 mil a yr from the fed for “family planning” and 3/4 of that goes to PP?

So, the state will not contract with PP and this will leave a 1 mil hole in the “family planning” budget?

If I have that right it’s a no-brainer bargain and if Daniels wants to have an iota of a chance to be the pubbie nominee he signs this bill. Or, at least does not veto it, but I think a pocket non-veto does nothing for him politically unless he just wants to harp on that “truce” thing.

To the left a “truce” is like the muslim “hudna” a time to rest and gear up for more battles with your enemies, which in the left’s case is us.

“Family Planning” money is something that needs to fall completely by the wayside. Refer couples to the corner drug store for a box of condoms.

Where is the money being spent? Social liberalism is NOT fiscally conservative no matter how deep in the sand moderate high minded Republicans bury their heads. The high minded GOP will NOT help this nation IF they practice socialism lite.

The group [Planned Parenthood of Indiana] received about $3 million in federal funding last year. State officials have speculated that the bill, if passed, would lead to the state losing all $4 million in federal family planning dollars that it received last year.

So unless 75% of the federal money is spent on Planned Parenthood you don't get any of it?

There's no alternative.

Why are social issues secondary to financial issues? Can’t these politicians walk and chew gum at the same time?

It’s like a family saying, “We don’t have time to deal with family safety or having children. We only have time to buy groceries and pay the bills.”

If Daniels vetoes this it shows he is a major wimp.

Exactly right. Scratch a social liberal, find a fiscal liberal underneath.... every time.

"I will sign HEA 1210 when it reaches my desk a week or so from now. I supported this bill from the outset, and the recent addition of language guarding against the spending of tax dollars to support abortions creates no reason to alter my position," said Daniels
