Given how things were at the time, the family probably didn't want to see "Negro" anywhere on the birth certificate and the registrar was willing to comply with their wishes.

I'd say that's highly likely. I would think "African" would still have been an embarrassment at that time, particularly for the grandparents, but it probably would've been viewed as a slightly better choice of word than "Negro."

I thought that that was probably the case. It would be interesting to find some other “African” born about the same time and see what their record is. I also suspect that there were not many born on the islands during that period. Possibly some military but not sure how those births would be recorded.
