Looks like the pilot turned at the end of the runway to go into the grass instead of the crushable material used to slow down runaway aircraft. He must not have been going very fast at this point, or he would have just taken the straight line into the crash barrier. Probably saved a lot of money in damage to the aircraft and the runway by making that turn.

In 2006, a Southwest plane overran the runway, killing a young boy in a car.
Story here.

Looks to have veered or swerved left at the end of the runway. Based on landmarks, it looks to be in this position (See plane in red, lower right).

One time I was flying Southwest from Manchester NH to Oakland with a stop at Midway. Originally I was to stay on my plane as people got on or off, but we were told that the plane was being taken out of service so we had to go to another gate quite a distance away. Good thing I didn’t stop to get a drink or buy a paper or something—by the time I walked fast down this hall, down that hall, down that hall and got to the gate in question, I just managed to get on the flight in time—put way in the back, of course, which was nice given the steep
ascent the plane made...yuck.
I think there was a Southwest plane that skidded off the runway at Midway and a kid on the ground, in a car, was killed...
To: Tatze
I’m guessing the pilot saw the end of the runway approaching and chose the softer surface as the way to bring his craft to a halt...inside the confines of the airport and not beyond the perimeter fencing.
