A teenager was stabbed and seriously wounded in a fight Monday at the National Zoo as the zoo marked African American Family Day. A 16-year-old was arrested and charged in the incident, D.C. police said.
D.C. police Cmdr. Michael E. Reese said the stabbing was connected to “some kind of ruckus” that apparently broke out within the zoo and might have resumed at or near the entrance on Connecticut Avenue NW.
.....The teenager was stabbed at least twice, at least once in the zoo and once at or just outside the entrance, Reese said. Some of the same assailants might have been involved in both attacks, he said.
.....In addition to the many children attending the zoo’s annual day-after-Easter celebration, tourists and youngsters on spring break filled the zoo to capacity, Legge said.
The free gathering dates to the 1890s. Oral history says that black domestic workers were required to work on Easter, so Monday was the day of family celebration.
In 2000, the Easter Monday celebration was marred when a teenager, in a dispute with teens from another neighborhood, shot and wounded seven people at the zoo’s main entrance. A year later, the shooter was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

On my way home from work tonight, I witnessed a mob of approximately 50 teens beating another teen and kicking him in the head right in the middle of 6 lanes of rush hour traffic on Connecticut Avenue just outside the National Zoo. It was terrifying. They left the victim lying in the middle of the street. He eventually stood up and was clearly dazed as he tried to walk. Eventually someone called him to the sidewalk and he managed to stumble away. Police were called but the traffic was simply too heavy for them to be able to catch up to the attackers. I doubt that this attack will be reported in the news. It was Black Family Reunion Day at the National Zoo.

Attorney General Holder needs to speak up.
Black leaders (since many seem only to care about “historically” oppressed people when they address hate crimes these days) have the opportunity after 100+ years of the black family Easter zoo event, that is now become marred by black youth mob violence, to say, “Enough!”
Next year the Obamas need to attend this event with their daughters and set an example.

No, the Obama's a perfect representative of both the "Professional" Beltway culture and of the DC Black culture. They only friggin care for themselves and those in their friggin cul-de-sacs and gang posses.
Just like the six lane river of Beltway lemmings did NOTHING to stop the beat down. Just like the Black Families visiting the Zoo did zilch to stop the fight, and then ran terrified in panic. Just like the youth posse-gang mobbed, stabbed and beatdown some fellow who strayed off the reservation of this-or-that group approved respect and dissing. All that this stabbing incident represented, so too do the Obamas Represent in their own selfish, callous, rude, thug, ignorant, debased way.

These thugs need to be taken off the streets and the black families that had to flee the zoo NEED TO SAY SOMETHING!

Well, I have to agree with you about “caring.”
Barack Obama didn’t seem to care when he shut down the voucher program for minorities attending his daughters’ school Sidwell Friends (I believe Speaker Boehner has gotten that reinstated).
And the voters of D.C. (rallied by the teachers’ union and the pastors) got rid of the mayor and education head trying to improve education in the District.
Twenty years ago I experienced a similar situation in CA at Magic Mountain - a roving band of black youths were intimidating everyone in the park. I imagine many entertainment events have been similarly impacted.
This has not been properly address and stopped.
Being PC is keeping this criminal activity alive and “well” and I ask, Why?
The friggin DC license plate rudely reads “No Taxation Without Representation” — and yet look how awfully, animalistically and selfishly DC REPRESENTS ITSELF.

Last year at the free zoo day in Memphis there was utter chaos, fights & a shooting. We live not far from Memphis & NO WAY would anyone I know go to the free day. It’s a guarantee for trouble. Again, let me say; I feel so sorry for Memphians who have to deal w/ all of the violence in their community.
And here all along I thought all the animals were in their cages! The horror!

Yes, when the w/b ratio was 60/40, it was a nice city, but it has flipped to 40/60, and it has gone down the tubes.
I understand it is now number one for murders.
I now have only a daughter living on the edge of the city.
Now it’s just once a year at the zoo? “African-American” Family Day used to be at the Lorton Reformatory every Sunday until DC finally shut the prison down and outsourced it— somewhere in West Virginia I think. Or was that Father’s Day? I remember seeing the Metrobus convoys that used to go down I-95 from DC to Lorton every Sunday.
